"Software Missing" GPSmap 60CSx

I need a little help here. I was updating my software through Garmin when I accidentally unplugged the cord during transfer. Now I have a blank screen & alarm with the only message SOFTWARE MISSING. I have tried everything I know. Is there a reset to factory specs I can do? I have the GPSmap 60CSx model. Thanks for your help.

Hi Sporket and

I came across this article quite some time ago. It may just salvage your 60CSx. Good luck and let us know if it works ^^.

Fixing a dead Garmin GPSMap 60CSx | Brilliant Corners

Of course there are later version of the firmware than the 3.30 quoted here. Personally I use 3.70 only because I have had problems with some storage cards on 3.90+

Regards,

-Andy

Re: "Software Missing" GPSmap 60CSx

Thanks for your help Andy. I was able to correct the problem by rerunning the update while pressing the joystick to the right. But the article was very informative. And with my luck, I just might need it. Thanks again for your help.

Re: "Software Missing" GPSmap 60CSx

It looks like the Brilliant Corners blog site has been shut down, and the author decided to abandon all the old articles rather than port any of them to his new site. iamasmith or Sporket, you don't happen to recall what the recovery procedure was, do you? I'd be surprised, since it was months ago....

r5r7, attempting to run or re-run the latest firmware update didn't do anything for you?

Re: "Software Missing" GPSmap 60CSx

Ahhh....firmware issues with the 60CSx...

When I first got my 60CSx, the GPS chipset software took a dump on me. I still have NO idea what happened initially because it worked fine out of the box but, after a bit, it would not get any satellite info at all. The rest of the unit seemed "normal". The GPS status page was completely blank. I totally freaked out and became massively depressed until I remembered a thing called "Google Search" and spent 5 seconds allocating a fix (pun intended).

What happened was my GPS firmware somehow got dropped and displayed version 0.00. I just had to run the Garmin Webupdater again and it installed the latest 3.00 GPS chipset firmware. All has been fine since. From my ubiquitous Google Search, I read that messing with the backlight or shutting it down before it fully starts up can cause this. I tried EVERY combination of "messing around" to see if I could repeat the problem. Never had it happen again running 3.00 for GPS firmware and 4.00 for OS firmware. I wanted to see if it would do it again because it was an EASY fix...unless it happened in the field... So far, so good after about 8 months of decent use...

Oh arse, I wish I had just pasted the article and cited it now.

No, sorry I can't remember what the procedure was.

Re: "Software Missing" GPSmap 60CSx

No problem, iamasmith! Thanks for responding. Perhaps Sporket, remembers. r5r7, what about running the latest firmware update, as MTalvola and I suggest?

If you have tried that, where does it fail? Unable to see the device, update starts but then fails, etc.? When you say you're "having the same problem" as Sporket originally posted - does that mean you're getting the "SOFTWARE MISSING" message and alarm?

Re: "Software Missing" GPSmap 60CSx

Download and run Webupdater from Garmin's website. It's free and simple to use. Hook the GPS up via USB and click "find device". It may take a minute or two. If it finds/sees your unit then you're golden. Follow the prompts from there to install the updates.

If your computer still can't "see" the GPS, either email or call Garmin. There definitely is a way to get a completely wiped unit talking to the computer since they have to load the operating system software in the first place. Be prepared to spend up to an hour on hold. Don't bother emailing them through the website. Email them directly at: support@garmin.com. I always get a response in a couple of days...sometimes sooner.

Re: "Software Missing" GPSmap 60CSx

r5r7, you mention a microSD card. Did you have maps on it? That might be where the corrupted file is that's causing your problem. To test, remove it from the GPS unit, and then try to power up your 60CSx. If all is well, you should have a functioning unit with basemap.

Re: "Software Missing" GPSmap 60CSx

As I understood him, it seems he was asking if there was a way to recover it via the SD card...not that the computer was "seeing it" and asking to do a recover from the card... But, definitely try pulling the card out. Can't hurt and he's got nothing to lose...
