Colorado 300 - How to delete tracks

Hi everyone,
I'm quite new to the Colorado, though I've used an eTrex Vista C for years. I have discovered how to delete waypoints, but can't see how to do the tracks.

Also, when I downloaded tracks and waypoints to the computer only 2 of the 20 tracks downloaded, and one of those was only half there. They're all still listed on the unit. I tried a second time, with the same result.

Also I have a (blank) SD card loaded in the unit. How do I know whether stuff is being stored on that or in the unit memory - I have seen no messages. Do I need to format the card in any way? If so, how?

Any help much appreciated!

Do you have the option to put the unit into 'usb mass storage mode' ? If so..try putting it into that mode and plugging it in, I bet thats where the bulk of your track data is if you have selected to use the card.

You should also be able to pull the card out of the GPS unit, and then use it in a media card reader attached to your computer.

Re: Colorado 300 - How to delete tracks

Hi, thanks for the tip. I have finally sorted it! You do all the deleting of tracks in 'My Computer' on Windows. And when it said in Mapsource 'There are no tracks or waypoints on this device' (when I selected 'receive from device') it wasn't true - I could still drag and drop them from the 'My Computer' box to the 'Mapsource' page and see them there - before I deleted. Incidentally does 'Mapsource' know when you've imported before, and then tell you there are no tracks/waypoints?

Why doesn't the owner's manual give some hints on data management?

Sjlw, I believe that MapSource looks for tracks & waypoints in device memory, but not necessarily from additional storage (SD or microSD) even though you may have configured your GPS unit to store data there. I don't think it keeps a running log of what has been done in the past...you upload to MapSource, and then you have to save the record to your computer - if you just close MapSource without saving, you'd lose that data.

The manuals for all of the mapping stuff seems pretty week, regardless of the brand. Perhaps Lowrance is better - I haven't looked at their manuals. Definitely an area in need of improvement!

That is correct.

Mapsource only reads track logs out of a device's internal memory. It doesn't read the tracklog files stored on the memory card.

Some Nuvi's like the 500/550 also archive old track logs to an archive folder. Those don't get transfered to Mapsource.
