I decided to put up some simple directions to various newer Garmin models with multiple via point or manual route capability below. The steps may not be the exact same button presses between units, but they are fairly similar enough this list should give you a good idea..
In the instructions below I am building a route from home, out to a couple places and then back home again. I am building this custom route on a Zumo 660 motorcycle GPS. Your results using other models may vary, but this is very similar to how it is done on the older GPS's as well, save for a few clicks here or there.
- Where to? -> Custom Routes -> New
- Add New Start Point -> Select "home" -> press select again.
- Add new end point -> Select "home" -> press select again.
- Press the Green + on the right side of route -> Favorites -> Click selected location in favorites that I had there already -> click select
- Press the Green + on the right side of route -> Favorites -> Select newly imported location into favorites -> press select again.
- Click "next"
- Get the screen that says "calculating 0%..100%"
- I then get the screen that says "back / turn review / save" , If I press the arrow key in the lower corner, I can cycle between "Faster Time" , "Shorter Distance" , "Off Road" , "Avoid Highways" , and it calculates each on the fly. I scroll to "faster time" and select "save"
- I am then at the screen that tells me my route name (Home to Home in this case) with 2 via points.
- To begin routing on that route I select "GO" and it begins routing me. If I am not at the starting location it asks if I want to be routed there, if I say NO it just guides me to the closest point along the route that I am.
- I can also click "back" instead and be back at the "custom routes" screen., if I scroll around there I can see the route I just created and select it, and navigate it if I like, or select another route.
This will only work on units with route planning and will let you save routes. The 7 series Nuvi's (Nuvi 750,760,765,770,775,etc.) will all let you enter and save about 10 routes. Motorcycle based units like the Zumo 660 and Zumo 550 (and 450) will also let you do this.
Once these routes are made they can be edited on the device or duplicated and modified as well. They can also be saved to your PC using Garmin Roadtrip (on Mac) or MapSource (on PC). This also means that routes build on the PC or Mac are able to be sent down to certain models of GPS which have this feature on them.
