Nuvi 650 Suddenly Gives Strange Directions??

My Nuvi 650 has been bulletproof for over a year, displaying sensible directions according to my navigation preferences (Quickest Route).

Today, after taking me to a destination, I selected a "Favorite" for the return trip and my 650 seemed to behave like HAL from A Space Odyssey. It took me very roundabout, off highway routes to my pre-programmed destination.

I ignored the bogus direction and began to drive the correct route.

It seemed determined to avoid all highways and kept trying to take me on local streets. I check my Prefs and they were correct (Quickest Route) and then re-entered the preference again and saved it.

Still, it wanted to go for a ride in the boonies, albeit, in the general direction of my destination.

Any ideas would be dearly appreciated.

Have you done any updates to it recently? My Nuvi 660 has been doing that since moving to the 2009 CIty Nav software. Some times resetting works for a while be then it's back to it's funny loops.

Andy, have you contacted Garmin about it? That sounds like a pretty serious issue!

Nope. Because if I load up Mapsource and design a route, the City Nav software also picks a funny route. Which leads me to think it's not the device.

Hmmm...then I guess that the only thing you can really do is report the strange routing behavior to Garmin and NAVTEQ, and hope that some future update will resolve the issue?

I just updated and will see what happens. What are "funny loops?"

I think Andy was just agreeing with you about the suddenly odd routing choices his nuvi sometimes makes....

Here's a screenshot of a loop my Nuvi 660 sent me on a while ago. It had me turn off a main road through a residential, narrow street, neighborhood. I've had it do this type of thing quite a lot since switching to City Nav 2009.

It's the same thing mine did.

Support told me "Go into your settings and hit the enabled button next to avoidances. Make sure highways and traffic are not checked."

I had already done that and neither the "highways" nor "traffic" were checked immediately after this incident. The unit apparently decided to use actions that were the same as those preferences even though they were not selected.

I did those same things on mine. The only way I got it around that was switching to shorter distance. With the older software this same location it didn't do this.

What about rolling back to a version prior to City Nav 2009? Or maybe you can browbeat Garmin into giving you a free upgrade to City Nav 2010? Good luck with that!
