| Manual Route - Garmin Nuvi 350
Is there anyway that I can enter or import a very specific route into my Garmin? Here are the Google Maps for part 1 and part 2 of the route: Google Maps - Route - Part 1 Google Maps - Route - Part 2 |

Hello, ryangambrill. From browsing the manual (page 20) for your Garmin nüvi 350, it looks like you will be able to do this by creating the route in MapSource, saving it as a GPX file, and then loading it to your nuvi on an SD flash memory card. Does anyone have direct experience doing this, and can give ryangambrill additional help? I'm a Garmin newbie, still waiting for my zūmo 660 to arrive....

The Nuvi 350 doesn't support custom routes. You can create waypoints (or custom POIs) for each location and manually pick waypoints as you travel, but there is no way link all the points together into a route. While you can upload a GPX file to it, it won't contain the route, just waypoints. When you pick a waypoint and tell the 350 to take you there, it's going to calculate the route based on the settings (ie, vehicle type, shortest distance, etc). It won't follow a predetermined route.

Well, there you have it, ryangambrill! You'll either have to use Andy's suggested workarounds or else start looking for a different GPS unit that has the capabilities you need. Do you have any recommendations, Andy? Say perhaps the Garmin nüvi 500/550? |

Basically for doing manual routes, you need to pick a GPS with support for routes. Garmin lists them in the specs tab for their devices. If it has a zero, it won't work. Even that is not a guarantee since the device itself will recalc the route when you activate it for navigation. It's best to use lots of via points if the route you want is out of the way...and of course do simulated runs on it to make sure it's going where you want it to. And you're right HumVee, the 500/550 support routes. |
