Software Vs Firmware Nuvi 760 to 765t etc

Is there a way to flash the nuvi 760 firmware to get lane assist?

Is the lane assist in the software or firmware?

Are certain features software based only?

Is the user interface firmware based?

Thanks guys

You could try asking Garmin to update the firmware/software for it but in all likelihood it won't happen. The small differences like that feature are how they keep so many models out there in the marketplace.

Re: Software Vs Firmware Nuvi 760 to 765t etc

Is there any reason to think the 765 and 760 are identical internally?

The lane assist data has to be part of the map data. During loading of the mapdata, if the device doesn't support lane assist, it may have not even include that info in the mapdata.

For example if I load City Nav software on my old 76S, it won't include the route calculation data since the device I'm sending it to doesn't support it.

Assuming you did load the firmware and it didn't work, are you sure you could reload the previous firmware for the 760? This wasn't with a 760, but I've heard of firmware updates going wrong and the device turning into a brick until it was mailed off to Garmin for reloading.

Re: Software Vs Firmware Nuvi 760 to 765t etc

By map data I mean the mapping software that is loaded on the unit. The roads, POIs, etc that are part of City Navigator. Part of that data for lane assist must be the information about how many lanes, which ones go where, etc. There's no guarantee a device without lane assist has the appropriate lane assist data as part of the mapdata upload, either through an update disk or when Garmin originally loaded the data before packaging. All speculation of course based off the fact that loading City Nav on my older device without turn-by-turn directions gets only the road info (map/names) and not the routing information to create routes on the roads.

I'd vote with Andy on this one. Lane assist, speed limit, street names, coordinates... all part of the map. There is nothing magic in a GPS that could let it know any of that without the map data.

The ability to use that data, now... that is firmware. And like Andy says, I doubt if the models are close enough internally to allow cross-flashing. Garmin would spend big bucks to stop that possibility.
