Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Next round of Zumo 660 photos...this time I focused a little more on the battery, battery compartment, and usb plugin area.

On the 660 there are alot of differences...I will take out the bike and car mounts later and review these and post some action shots.

I can say that the MC mounting hardware is all by RAM again which is cool

The new mount is very thin and low profile...it's interesting at best.
The MC mount appears to be hardwired to the 'dock' portion of the MC mount . This could make wiring very interesting.

The unit has some heft to it, it's definitely heavier than other Nuvi units, but not as hefty as the Zumo 550.

More to come...gimme a few hours to play with this thing

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Nice! I wonder if it will have trouble with the connection being on the doc in the motorcycle mount. I've heard a few Zumo owners complain about it not making good contact after a while. I'll look forward to your review!

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Thanks for sharing your pics, Max!

Where did you get your Zumo 660? Mine has been on order from ProVantage for almost 2 weeks, and GPSCity keeps pushing off their ship date announcements (most recently to 05/15/2009).

Can you answer some questions for me (& maybe post a few more pictures)?
  • I'd love to see what the motorcycle mount and automobile mount look like.
  • Can you connect the external antenna connector to the automobile dock? It would be great if I didn't have to fiddle with the connections every time I wanted to move the Zumo between my car and my bike....
  • I see the micro-SDHC memory card slot in your pictures of the battery compartment. Do you have to remove the battery to insert & remove the card? A minor annoyance if I want to change out my mp3's very often....
It's apparent from your pictures that the mini-USB connector is under the battery cover. It's kind of a drag to have to take the cover off every time I want to connect my Zumo to my PC!

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Max hasn't responded since his original post. I hope that he's fine and just out enjoying rides with this new GPS. In the mean time, I have found another Zumo 660 user review:
randy's Zumo 660 review
I found reference to it on a BMW motorcycling forum, where there was some discussion regarding Garmin's change in weather radio services, and the fact that there is no longer a security screw on the motorcycle mount. Personally, I agree with randy that I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving such an expensive piece of hardware sitting on my bike regardless of the security screw, so having a release mechanism that is easier to manage is a better choice.

From randy's comments and pictures (& included PDF copies of the user guide & manual!), my questions were answered:
  • There are photos and comments of regarding the motorcycle mount (& the manual shows renderings of the car mount).
  • Looking at the battery compartment, you definitely have to remove the battery to get to the micro-SD flash card slot.
  • Although there's a mini-USB 'B' port under the battery cover, the motorcycle mount also has integrated cables for USB, headset & power connections. The USB connection is meant for use with the traffic service accessories, but I suspect you can make a full USB connection with it.
  • The external antenna connector port is located under a weather sealed flap on the left side of the unit (as well as a 3.5 mm audio jack), but there is no mention of an external antenna connector on the car mount (just microphone & automotive power).
randy gave the new Zumo 660 a favorable review, though he did give nods to some of the comments/complaints made on the k-bikes forum. His wish-list of a transflective LCD display for full sunlight readability and Nexrad weather radar overlays make sense - hopefully Garmin will continue to improve their motorcycle GPS products!

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Sorry bout that folks...life has been ups and downs lately. Had to put down a family pet of 12 years, Mom is going under the knife next week for some recently found evil, and staff reductions at work have me over the road a little bit. Blah...I miss my hobbies!

But...I have definitely been out putting the miles on this guy when I can, about 700 so far

Though I have to say...the bad news is that it broke on me yesterday . I enabled bluetooth and paired it to my helmet (Scala Rider Teamset) and the next time I turned it off, it never came back on normally.

Some notes:

- The laneview is awesome on big interstates.
- I REALLY HATED that security screw, and have converted it to a 'quick threaded' device on all of my prior Zumo mounts, so yes I was really glad to get rid of that. I really like the new mount.
- The flipside of the new mount is the permanent wiring...its a give and take, but you cannot detach the wiring harness from the mount. It makes it ok I guess for theft resistance, but makes wiring sort of annoying during initial install. I also wish they offered a way of shortening portions of it or lengthening portions, etc. It's sort of klugey.

I have tried the MSN direct with it in the car and it seems to update faster than any of my Nuvi's have with the same service, I don't understand why the UNIT would have anything to do with this, but it seems to.

It also has a neat little 360 view function, you can do a fly around of the location you're navigating to when selecting it (and pressing map).

Until yesterday, it was good enough that I removed the other GPS's from my bike (Zumo 550 , 2720 and 2610) as the 660 really is the bees knees. Now, I am at the mercy of Garmin suppport

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Max, sorry to hear of your troubles. The loss of a beloved family pet is hearbreaking - and family going into surgery stressful. Add the problems with this damn economy, and you've got to find joy where you can. I hope your mom has a fantastic and full recovery, and the work issues get left in the dust!

As to the Zumo flaking out - bummer! It's always a challange being an early adopter to new hardware. I'll be in the same boat when my Zumo finally arrives - they apparently can't keep these things in stock! I'm guessing it's a firmware bug that needs to be resolved. Were you not able to do a factory reset to recover device functionality?

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Hi new on here.had my zumo 660 for about a week, pleased with it but one feature i dont like as the predictive spelling, when you type in the name of the town or city you want to go to sometimes as little as 2 letters it comes up with a couple of suggestions but neither might be the one you are looking for,you then cant progress any further is there any way to overide this fuction?

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Welcome, jimlowe! I'm sure forum members are tired of hearing me whine about how I'm stilling waiting for my zūmo 660 to arrive - but I'm glad that you and Max have gotten yours! I look forward to your continuing posts concerning your experiences with your zumo 660. I expect that we'll be able to learn much from each other.

As to your current problem, I looked at the Zumo Owner's Manual and I'm thinking that perhaps the method your using only searches the predifined entries? You might try doing "Search All" and see if it allows you to continue typing without stopping you with the predictive stuff. Page 10 of the (English) manual has the steps, but here's a quick summary:
  • Where To? > Address
  • Change State or Country (if necessary)
  • Search All
Hopefully Max will be able to help you further.

Hi Humvee thanks for the welcome.Just tried your suggestion but when you touch "search all" the screen displays "enter house number" and a numerical screen ,no letters.

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

There is no way to override the function, but it will only do this for the state or province that the unit has been selected to be in (in the prior screen).

The good news is, if you're spelling is right (unlike mine, often ) you'll have a much shorter list to comb through this way...

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

All that said...I have to gripe a little bit about my 660.

Memorial day weekend I took it out for a tour and 1/2 way through my travels it stopped working. Would boot up and the green "maps loading" line would come across the screen, then it would shut off and reboot again. This occured with ANY condition I could create.

Shy of a reset button, there was nothing for me to do besides ask for directions home. Yes, on this day I actually said "the 660 will not let me down" and broke my own rule of only having 1 means of navigation while being hundreds of miles away from home, and in the woods .

Anyways...Garmin's kneejerk email response to me the following morning was "upgrade to firmware 2.88". I called them and said "of what do you speak, that version doesen't exist?". The guy on the call asked who I got that email from, then told me it was a beta version that should fix this issue, but it is not coming out for the public just yet.

He basically told me I could send my unit in or just wait a few days and hopefully they'd release it. I asked him on the phone if they wanted me to do any further debug, he said no, so I power cycled the unit and held down the lower right corner key (erase all user info aka factory default ALL). This worked like a charm and the unit now appeared to work normally. That being the case I said ok I'll wait for the update...have a nice day.

Used the unit with no issue in the car/bike for a month or two, then noticed new 3.x firmware out for it, which allegedly fixes a problem with it restarting after some firmware problem? Hmm...looks good I'll take it! Load it up and use it for a couple days in the car, works great. Load it on the bike and take off for an 1800 mile ride going a little ways across the country. 728 miles into my journey, I restart the bike and the damn 660 goes into this loop again. . Knowing the fix I reset the unit and lose all my info. Really glad I had the Legend HCx along as the tracklogger or I would have been really pissed at this point. After my info is gone from the 660, it boots up and I pull my routes/favs off the microSD again, and we're on our way.

2 days later, I turn the unit on in my hotel room and same freaking trick. WTF? I kill all my data and call it a day. Didn't load anything back into the unit and just went along on my way.

I have tried reloading all maps to it and wiping it and reinstalling current version of code, etc. before my big trip and it still messed up.

I am REALLY happy with about 87% of what Garmin did with this unit. The selectable displays on the main page and when routing, the map zooming intelligence, etc. This losing all my crap everytime the unit bugs out is really starting to irritate me though...

Just thought I'd share somewhat of an update for ya's...

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Yeah...it looks like Garmin rushed the z660 out the door, and are using early purchasers as beta testers. I heard that they had a firmware patch released even before the units started hitting the shelves, and there's been a steady progression since then. Not a good way to generate positive buzz for a product! I'm very hopeful that they'll nail down all the issues eventually, and it will be a rock-solid unit. Thanks for your post, Max! I will be sure to carry my 76CSx in my tank bag for backup on any of my long road trips....

No problem HumVee, always glad to post a bit of a warning if it means being lost somewhere in the rain, on a bike . Don't forget to use Lithium batteries in the 76 too if you're not using it that often

Hmm..start a new thread for the issues I am having or not..hmm...

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Hi, I have just taken delivery and looking forward to using the Zumo 660 (replacing my 2610). Only issue I can find so far is that to register and indeed use USB you have to remove the battery cover and use the USB connection in the battery area. There is a USB port on the Car Mount but when you plug into that the unit comes up with an error message “The USB Cable is connected to the wrong port” . This seems weird, and a a clear design problem unless I am doing something wrong. Does this mean that every time I want to upload routes and waypoints I have to take the battery cover off (potentialy losing it or damaging the Zumo) and also what about charging from USB or the Power Supply when not connected to the bike.....

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

WOW...super great thread! Thanks all for your posts.

I have been looking at the 660 for a while. It is being put on all the new Visions that Victory is building in 2010. While this is a good move because it looks great on the bike, I am missing one very important thing. I bought a 2820 a couple of years ago and then purchased a GXM30 so I could have tunes on the road via XM.

Here is my problem. Apparently Garmin is not supporting XM with this unit but they are with the 550. I do not want and will not purchase the 550. Now, that being said, I notice the cool USB port just above the battery. This is the same USB port that is used on the 2820 for the GXM receiver. I am a tinkerer and figure that this won't work because the software may not exist in this unit, but is there a chance the 660 does support the GXM but Garmin is keeping that under wraps?

I would really like to update my GPS but without the tunes, I am going to stick with my ugly looking (outdated look) 2820 is I must.

Thanks again!

Well I've been looking for a little while...and apparently it's public knowledge now so here you go:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=135&pID=65203

Now the quest begins to see if I can get the GXM-40 to work with my Zumo 660

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

LOL, Max...I only read this thread after responding to rugerkahr's thread we've been discussing. I see you've alread found the zūmo 665 listing on Garmin's site!

Quote:
Add Weather and Radio

The zūmo 665 comes standard with our GXM 40 XM antenna. Simply add an optional XM subscription and receive real-time XM Radio with 170 digital channels of commercial-free music, news, sports, talk and entertainment when you travel in the U.S. With the addition of XM NavWeather, you can access up-to-the-minute weather data and NEXRAD radar graphics from your map screen to stay ahead of the storm. Plus, when you add on XM NavTraffic, you can find out where the trouble spots are and route around them.
If we can't load the z665 firmware onto our z660's, I may have to seriously consider selling and upgrading. Of course, I'll have to price out subscriptions to XM Radio, NavWeather & NavTraffic before I decide....

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Very informative thread guys, thanks for the details.

I have a 550 with two motorcycle mounts (on two bikes) and really, really like it. The Harley Shop was trying to interest me in the 660, raving about it's great sceen but I did not bite as mine is still fine. The issues posted here certainly give me pause about suggesting the 660 to friends!

Max, how did you modify the security screw to make it function better? That is about the only aggravation I have with the 550 mount kit.

Thanks...

Thanks Max! Just ordered two of them.
Do you leave the screw in place or is it to remove the device whenever you park the bike in public?

Re: Garmin Zumo 660 Unboxing

Hi again. It's spring and I got my bike out today! Hooray!

Since the last post, I ordered and received the thumb screw.
I now proceeded to try out the replacement thumb screw but had trouble getting it started. Got the old one out but can't get the new one to begin threading. Any tips?

Thanks!

Nevermind...I got it started finally. Your tip about "O" Ring prompted me to try again to push through the ring first. Successful!
Thanks..

I am just an old Englishman who needs his ganddaughter to help him work a telephone since they took away button A and B. Anyone under 50 and foreign won't get this joke!!
I've got a Nuvi 550 which is now 3 years old and has seen a lot of Europe and Morocco including being dropped in sand and water. It replaced maps made of papyrus!
I'm looking at the Zumo 660 and have been trying to see for about 2 days on this interweb thing what "Mounting Hardware" includes.
Now I know I can power it from the bike with the kit included, I'll buy one!
Thanks again.
Regards,
John
