I have recently purchased a Garmin etrex Venture HC mainly for the purpose of hunting. When I put the TOPO maps on the unit it worked great, no problems whatsoever. However, when I tried to put City Navigator maps (specifically Ontario's map) on the unit there wasn't sufficient storage. I'm wondering if anyone knows of software available that allows you to save portions of the province to the unit similar to the way the TOPO maps are saved. Thanks for your input in advance.

Mapsource or mapinstall will let you combine some of topo and cn and upload to your unit.

First download MapInstall from here:Garmin: MapInstall Updates & Downloads

Once you have it installed on your pc then open it and select the map that you want to send to your etex. Watch the left side of your screen at the bottom to the size of the map that you are building. Get the area from topo or cn that you want to display then switch to the other map product cn or topo get the select the area you want still keep watch on the total size. Once you have what you want just tell it to send to gps and it will start building the map file and then it will transfer the file to your gps.
If your etex does not have a sd card then you can only build a map not to exceed 24mb. Also your gps will have to be connected to your pc. I hope this will get you started let me know if you need more help. Mike

Sorry friend but that doesn't work. I'm sure if i was trying to use an area smaller than the province of Ontario than it might. As soon as I click on Ontario, in CN, it fills my unit past 24mb. I'm looking for software that will divide the province into squares similar to the TOPO maps.

Unfortunately there may be no way to do this. The square sizes aren't adjustable. However I would try contacting Garmin. They also have a Metroguide Canada product. Maybe that would have smaller sizes. I would guess their tech support would be able to tell you if the Metroguide Canada product has smaller squares.

They list the Venture HC as compatible with Metroguide Canada and City Nav, so I would ask them why it isn't possible to split up Ontario since they are saying their product works for your device, even though they left the area too large to fit on the Venture HC.
