| Nuvi 680 is a Frozen Veggie
Was scrolling thro' music files, when screen froze and did not respond to any touch. Would not turn off using power button, so did a hard reset. I now have a vegetable. Unit stays on Garmin splash screen when turned on, whether using power button or using power source. Computer does not see unit at all....Holding power button produces Pre-Boot Mode, then Loader, then Loading Software, then reverts to splash screen. Does the same thing with or without SD card....have tried all USB ports and different cables !!! Did not load any updates or POI's previous to this disaster !! Help...I did love my Nuvi !! |

When you say did a hard reset, you mean just pressed the reset button? I believe the full hard reset is initiated by pressing power and holding the reset... Either way it sounds like a call to Garmin is in order. Were you using an SD card that was within the typical size spec for the device?

I just pressed the reset button initially; however I have tried both ways since then....the card I am using was 2Gb, the same I've been using all along; I did not add any data to it before the problem. Guess I'll try garmin........! |

Curiouser and curiouser.......things have now changed...not for the better. In an attempt to coax the little ----- to do something, I have been trying to discharge the battery completely by repeating the usual routine ad nauseum......when I tried again today, a new message appeared on the splash screen..."System Software Missing", if I just switch on without holding down the power button. Not only that, but throughout this saga, the only way to switch off was by pressing the reset switch. I can now switch off normally by using the power button. I will continue trying to discharge the battery, and will then recharge from a power supply and see what happens ????? |

Holy Cow! I am having the EXACT same issues you've described here. Did you ever get your Garmin back? I live in a major metroplex having moved here from corn country in the mid-west. I travel a good deal for work and I'm going to have a stroke if I can't get this device back online. It was working one day and the next it's completely frozen. The touch screen doesn't respond AT ALL! Any one have any suggestions? I've had this since late March 2008 so it's about five months past a year. I sure hope these things last longer than 18 months!! Pleeze...any suggestions welcome.

'Fraid not ! I tried many things to get the thing working.....my e-mails to Garmin were ignored. It is now consigned to the expensive interesting junk heap. Next one I buy will not be a Garmin....... Sorry I can't help. |

Good News! Called Garmin Automotive. Talked to Paul, who was friendly, kind, understanding, wonderful and helpful. Since I'd already tried a hard reset he walked me through downloading software updates. That didn't work. Since I haven't had the device long (one year and a few months), they're replacing it. I'm sending my unit back and Paul's already shipping me a refurbished one. He charged the unit to my credit card and I'll get a credit when they receive the one I'm returning. I'm very encouraged and impressed. Garmin stood behind their product and was extremely helpful. I was worried that I'd be left with a useless piece of expensive junk but I'm extremely relieved after talking to Paul at Garmin. I will continue to recommend Garmin. I love my Nuvi 660 and the Support has been impressive so far. |

Did the unit come up as an external drive when hooked up via USB where you could see the directory structure? If you had you backed up your unit to a folder on your computer BEFORE having problems, I'll bet $100 you could have easily restored it in under an hour by copying that known, good instance from your computer back to the GPS.

| Re: Nuvi 680 is a Frozen Veggie Yes, there are ways. The easiest one is to just make sure it is turned up on the main volume page AND the volume page in the system settings where you can control the navigation voice and MP3 volume separately. The other ways involve going into a special "Garmin only" type system menu on start up and making sure the internal firmware/hardware volume is set to 100%. And/or use a free program called TTSVoiceEditor where you can actually modify the TTS voice file and then re-save it back to the same location on your GPS. It's a pretty neat program as you can change what the GPS actually says, speed up/slow down the voice...and make the volume even louder. |

| Re: Nuvi 680 is a Frozen Veggie: Ultimate solution Zeroth Dimension: December 2010 The touchscreen can be made to work by using a little heat along the edges. Read this blog to figure out how to do it. Needs some patience and 2-3 hours. |
