| 3.90 update for 60CSx and 76CSx exercise caution
I just updated my 60CSx with the 3.90 software update that came out today. Now it hangs on power off just giving a long beep (never ending) and periodically just locks up whilst keying around. I did a factory reset of the unit to see if the config was screwed but that didn't help. I'm going to ask Garmin about this but I urge caution on this one. Regards, -Andy |

I can confirm that after reinstalling once from the Mac and again from a PC using WebUpdater and after doing a factory reset several times that the problem still exists :S

Have you tried loading it without using the Webupdater? I took the plunge even after your warning and tried it. I loaded it directly and so far it's working fine. I only have a 2 gb card though so I can't test the only change from 3.7 to 3.9, support for maps larger than 2 gb. |

Yep, I updated it again without Webupdater and had the same result. I have since downgraded it back to 3.70 and it works perfectly again. Ah well, I may try again 3.70 -> 3.90 in case there is something different about an upgrade process to a reinstall process. |

Unless you need mapsets larger than 2GB, there was nothing else mention in the release notes.

Andy, how are you getting on with your 76CSx with 3.90, notice any difference? I noticed that they removed the D indicator off the satellite screen when you have WAAS enabled. Didn't like that. I also noticed that the GPS firmware rev went from 3.00 to 3.00s and it may be coincidental but I didn't get an EGNOS lock at ALL with 3.90 (bird just kept drifting in and out). As soon as I went back outside (just before this edit) with 3.70 I got rapid acquisition and full EGNOS correction. ![]() ![]() Anyway I did some testing with three supposedly identical cards, 2Gb Sandisk MicroSD (NOT Ultra II). Card A: Lockups on powerdown with infinite beeeeeeep. Periodic freezes in use. Card B: Lockups on powerdown as above. No usage freezes in limited test. Card C: Worked fine as far as I could tell. Downgraded to 3.70 because I wanted my D's back. Last edited by iamasmith; 04-04-2009 at 6:08 AM. |

I haven't noticed any performance difference. The D's aren't there but if it's still getting the same reception, I don't see any need to know if it's using an EGNOS lock.

Do all Garmin models reset their maps after each update?

Reset their maps? As in the map data you loaded on them? No they don't. The firmware updates only update the "operating system" so to speak.

| Re: 3.90 update for 60CSx and 76CSx exercise caution http://www8.garmin.com/software/GPSMAP60CSx_370.exe Just unpack the installer and run it. It will let you downgrade as well as upgrade to 3.70 if you have an earlier version. |

I also have the infinite beep on powerdown since installing FW 3.90 on my GPSMap60Cx. I will attempt to backgrade to 3.70. Is there a mac version of the 3.70 installer? or I will need to do it with the windows installer via Parallels on my mac.

I'm afraid you have to go the Windows route. The Mac updates are only provided as GCD files that WebUpdater processes and there is no way (AFAIK) to select a previous version. I ended up running it through Fusion which worked fine. |

I've now done the down grade to 3.70 through Parallels and everything's OK again. I must make a note to not be an early adopter of Garmin software. Thanks all for the link to the old file.

Had the same experience when I upgraded to 4.0. Found a similar issue on the Garmin support site, though not relating to the firmware upgrade. They said to connect the device to the computer in USB Mass Storage mode and delete any folders from the MicroSD card (being careful not to delete your map or other GPS data). Has something to do with "the inadvertent creation of multiple layers of subdirectories on the data card". Didn't make much sense to me, but I tried it, and no more beep.

I installed the 4.0 update a couple of months ago and have had the continuous beep on shutdown with one MicroSD card (a PNY 2Gb card). I get other problems even with the original MicroSD (SanDisk) provided by Garmin. On switching the GPS on it will often lock up and then the display fades to blank over about 3 seconds. It sometimes takes powering up two or three times to get it to stay on - after which it generally stays on indefinitely. Also it forgets the Save Tracks setting I had set and I have to set it to On almost every time I power up. I want to to go back to the 3.70 update - but the link posted by iamasmith above no longer seems to go to the right place - you end up in the Garmin Store. Does anyone know where the older firmware updates can be found? WebUpdater doesn't seem to be offering me the option to go back to an earlier version. Thanks Will |

Taking danjmo's post as a start point I was able to stop the "infinite beep" that had been haunting me for the last month or two (thanks for that). Since it was a very simple procedure I thought it was worth posting here. First of all, I'm using the GPSmap 60CSx unit, and I communicate with my Macbook Pro using the basemap software. Since both the webupdater does not allow for the installation of previews software versions, and I couldn't access such versions on the web (to install them outside webupdater) I was facing a dead-end. Inside my microSD I had several GPX files (I have my unit set to store them in the card) and a folder named "Garmin". Inside this folder is the file that has the maps installed in the GPS unit. As I mentioned before, following danjmo's hint I started to look for folders that could be messing up the unit... none found. But since MacOS sometimes creates hidden folders I decided to connect the GPS unit to a computer running Windows. I couldn't find any hidden folder either. Nevertheless, I opted to copy the Garmin folder to my computer, fast format the card and copy the Garmin folder back to the card. I've since turned on and off the GPS unit many times and have had no more of that annoying "infinite beep". And the installed maps where recognized flawlessly. Hope this works for all you guys reporting this problem. |

Garmin Software Updates Click the I Agree link at the bottom. That will take you to their FTP site. Scroll down until you find the gps7x folder. Click on that. Then click on the gpsmap76cs folder. Inside you'll find older firmware for the CSx models. | |

Been using O/S firmware 4.00 on my 60CSx since it was first released and 3.90 before that. Zero problems with an 8GB card with just over 6BG of data on it. 3.00s for the GPS firmware. PC/Windows XP.
