New Oregon 400t model in 2009?

Has anyone heard if Garmin will have a new (hopefully improved) Oregon 400t model this year? I'd buy the current model but 95% of the reviews I've read complain about poor screen readability outdoors.

The Colorado came out with great fanfare, and did not take the world by storm.
The Oregon came out with great fanfare, and did not take the world by storm.
Rather than an updated Oregon, I expect the Washington to come out next. There will be no buttons, roller wheels or touch screen. All menu navigation will be by voice command. Voice commands will not work in noisy environments, but the screen will look great outdoors!

I haven't heard anything... just wondering.

To iamasmith: If it's the Utah, would you be allowed to have more than one?

Re: New Oregon 400t model in 2009?

Garmin released the Oregon 550 and 550t this month (May 09).

The main difference I see is a built-in 3.2 megapixel camera that geotags the photos. Wonder if the outdoor screen readability has been improved?

Re: New Oregon 400t model in 2009?

The Garmin Oregon 550 looks like a nice update:

The 550 series brings several new features to the Oregon line:
  • As expected, a camera (3.2 megapixels, 4x zoom, auto-focus) for snapping geotagged photos
  • A tri-axial compass, so you don’t have to hold it level when navigating
  • An “enhanced sunlight-readable touchscreen,” hopefuly improving one of the few negative characteristics of this high-resolution display series
  • Two-precharged AA NiMH batteries and a charger are included as well!

Re: New Oregon 400t model in 2009?

It would be good if the batteries could be charged in the unit itself.
It's a real pain taking these things out of their cases all the time to charge/change batteries.

Voice prompts would also be great to see in a handheld.

I don't really think too many people need a camera in a GPS.
Most hikers are already going to be carrying a camera that is at least the quality of a mobile phone camera.

Re: New Oregon 400t model in 2009?

The Garmin website has been updated to show the new Oregon 550/550t (topographic maps included) models:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=&pID=26876
Unfortunately, the links to manuals do not have any publications listed yet, so I can't say for sure that in unit charging isn't possible - but the fact that the 'in the box' description lists "AA charger" and "AA NiMH batteries" makes it sound unlikely that you will be able to simply plug the unit directly in to a charger and charge up the batteries internally. On the plus side, continued use of AA batteries in this series means that you can always carry a supply of alkaline AA or charged NiMH batteries with you on a long hiking trip and be able to do fast swaps.

I agree with you on the camera - but the technology is so inexpensive to manufactuer now you're starting to see them in anything that has batteries.... I wouldn't consider it a selling point on a GPS, but on the other hand if it doesn't unduly raise the price it becomes one of those "handy in the event I forget my camera" features....
