Viewing complete track on 76CSX

I have a problem viewing a track with points more that 500 on my 76 CSx gps.
Example.
I have a track with 1700 points and when i display it on my gps only a portion is shown. If i filter the points down to less than 500 i can see the whole track.
Has anyone had this problem, is it common to this gps or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Hmm, I do not have a 76Csx, but let me see if I can do the same thing on my Legend...

I have attached the track with the 1700 points.

Thanks for trying it on your GPS.

Re: Viewing complete track on 76CSX

When I sent the track to my 76CSx it said the track was truncated. That is odd. I sent a bunch of my tracks back and forth from Mapsource to the GPS and none were truncated. But sending yours, every time it cuts it short. Does this happen with all you track logs?

I'm not in my computer now. As soon as I arrive to my home I'll try.

Re: Viewing complete track on 76CSX

I just found this on another site. It appears that my 76CSx can only handle 500 points in a track. I tried and any more that 500 points will cause it to be truncated.

Thanks

C&P
Garmins suck for track useage.. you can only have 20 tracks with each 500 points each. You'll have to use mapsource to divide the tracks down to 500 each. Check into a Lowrance Expeditoin (or H2oC) for more track points. They store 100 tracks at 10,000 points each. I use my garmin for dualsporting due to autorouting and such, but offroad , I use strictly Lowrance.

Re: Viewing complete track on 76CSX

It happened the same to me... I checked in the Garmin support and this is what I found... really sucks:

When a track is saved on the device, the number of track points in the track will be lessened. While there may be more track points in the active track log, the saved track will only get 500 points to save in the device. The information stored with the tracks is shortened as well, so information like speed and time are removed. If this data is needed, the track must be kept in the active log, not saved.

Re: Viewing complete track on 76CSX

The way to get around the 500 point limit in saved tracks is to not save them to the device before you upload them to a computer.

Yes, keep the track you will to store in the active log, and transfer it to the computer.
In the computer, split the track in pieces of no more of 500 points (copy from the track properties, and paste them to a new track).
I made this process with your test file.
Hope this help.

Re: Viewing complete track on 76CSX

This is what is strange. The truncated tracklog has nothing to do with the 500 point limit of saved logs.

On the track log posted by Rod, the entire log is visible in Mapsource, but once uploaded to the 76CSx, it's truncated.

I have no trouble loading a 3400 point tracklog from Mapsource to the 76CSx and the entire 3400 points are shown on the device.

When I load Rod's tracklog, the GPS displays a message saying that is has been truncated. I can't figure out why it's truncating it.

That's why I asked Rod if this happens on all the logs he has. The 500 point limit is only for saving a log to the device from the menu. It does not apply to tracklogs uploaded from Mapsource. And the 500 point limit doesn't cut off the track log after the first 500. It thins out the frequency of the points when it saves it. Your entire loop, beginning to end will still be there with just not as many points along the way.

Andy, can you attach an example of a tracklog with more than 500 points?

I tried with this file and it can be transfered back to the GPS without any cut. It is full downloaded.

But, when I went to the track function in the gps, It doesn't shows this track.

Another thing that I realized is, if you change the name of the track in mapsource to something different ACTIVE LOG XXX, and try to download to the GPS, the cut happens again.... Interesting.

Andy, When you download your track to the GPS, how you can access to it for use?

Re: Viewing complete track on 76CSX

Hi gents,
I posted the question to garmin and there reply is shown below. I am presently offshore without my GPS and therefore cannot try anything. Maybe this reply can help you understand what is going on and maybe you guys can try there suggestions.

C&P
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Sorry to hear that is happening for you. I would check two display items on the device. The first one would be to see how many Track Points are supposed to show. The check that go to your MAP page > press MENU > Setup Map > Tracks. Make sure that the device will display more than 500 points. After that go to your Main Menu > Tracks > Color > make sure that is not transparent. If you have saved tracks in there that are similar or larger in size, then I would recommend that you move that data to a computer to free up space on the drive of the GPSMap 76CSx. Please let me know if any of these steps do not work for you.

With Best Regards,

Interesting. That is the problem. If you rename the track, it truncates it at 500 points when it is sent back.

If you don't rename the track, it doesn't show up in the "saved tracks" section, but is loaded directly into the "active log" area. Notice the tracklog percentage bar changes when you reload a track that you haven't renamed (ie, an ACTIVE LOG XXX named track).

I can access the tracklog but either hitting save/tracback. It shows up on the map if I zoom to that area on the map (just south of the Bay Area, California), do you see the track?

Looks like Garmin needs to correct this with a firmware update. It shouldn't truncate the tracklog.

Yes, I saw your track (I has to look for it manually... took me some time).

I agree with you that this has to be a bug...

Re: Viewing complete track on 76CSX

Looks like this is not a bug. I emailed Garmin's tech support and found out that is the way they programmed Mapsource to handle it.

This is the intended operation. When the file is named ACTIVE LOG XXX,
the GPS unit will identify it as an active track log and allow it to
have up to 10,000 points. When the file is named anything other than
ACTIVE LOG, it will be considered a saved track, and will be truncated
to 500 points.

That is fine except it really should be reducing the frequency of points down to 500, leaving you the entire track, beginning to end. Hopefully they'll see why this needs correction.
