nuvi 780 worth $100 more than nuvi 760??

Hi gang - why is the nuvi 780 posted $100.00 more than the nuvi 760 on the Garmin website??? It says “MSN Direct compatible – receiver included” vs.” FM traffic compatible – receiver included” per the Garmin web site. Aren’t they basically the same ‘pay-for-play’ traffic services? Am I missing some other action-packed feature. I can’t see that MSN compatible is such a big whoopie! Does that mean the 780 is NOT FM compatible or is that in addition to MSN compatible? Inquiring minds want to know!!

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob, welcome to the site.
I haven't actually looked into it, so remember that this is the "errornet" and what you are about to hear may or may not have any resemblance to the truth.

MSN Direct is wireless like a cell phone, or like putting a wireless card in your laptop. Supposedly it is therefore available much more widely, as opposed to needing to be near an FM transmitter.

FM needs to be near an FM transmitter which has limited area coverage, and is generally only available in major metropolitan areas.

That description of MSN Direct makes sense. Thanks for the reply. I just bought a DOA 780 from EBay that the seller described as possibly having a battery problem. I'm hoping to peel the thing open and try to replace the battery myself. If that works, I'll still have to get an MSN receiver thingy, I guess, to make that feature work. Fortunately, the DOA 780 came with a functional 750 - two for the price of one - WOO HOO!

A big whoopie of the MSN Direct is that it tells you gas prices, movie times, weather, news, stocks, and local events, additionally to traffic reports.

The FM traffic, on the other hand, only reports traffic. Oh, and occasionally sponsored ads.
