Garmin Nuvi 760

yesterday I received my new garmin nuvi 760 from walmart. it came via u.p.s. in a box that was 20 by 20 and a minimal amount of brown paper packing kind of tossed in the box.

the garmin box itself seemed not to be packed very well either. the unit was in the cardboard slot but the cables, bracket and instruction were just flopping around the bottom portion of the garmin box - is that normal? this is a brand new unit or it's supposed to be, that's why I am asking. I would think these delicate units would be packed tightly in foam.

finally, it comes with the car adapter but I'd like to be able to charge it in the house... it also came with a usb cable for downloading but is that capabale of charging the unit without over-powering the usb port on the pc? I have also seen a wall charger that uses the car plug to power the garmin from the wall outlet... any thoughts on that as opposed to a dedicated wall charger?

what should I do first... other than unpack it (that's all I've done so far)?

thanks for your help!

Re: Garmin Nuvi 760

I charge mine using the USB cable.

Two caveats...
1) it is slow to charge this way
2) it must be a powered USB port. Not all actually are.

But I don't think you can draw too much juice via USB. It is the port that will limit it, not your device.

Welcome to the site.

The 1st thing you did may have been to unpack it...
but the 2nd thing was to come here! A wise thing to do, except it appears all the knowledgeable people are on vacation still after Turkey Day!

Re: Garmin Nuvi 760

I agree with you on the packing. I typically charge mine with the USB port on my laptop with no issues. When in the car, I'll sometimes use the provided FMtraffic car adapter, but not often since FMtraffic isn't available in El Paso, TX. I've heard that the motorola phone chargers work just fine with the Garmins. I'll check that out today, as I have a couple of those laying around. Oh, I also bought a hard case (not really hard) to put it in when not using it. I can't count the numerous times I have dropped my phone, and don't think a GPS would survive a fall. They had them on sale for $11 at CompUSA this weekend, so not a bad price.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 760

hello,

beeing new on this site, i think this item and its recent date from the reviews is a good place to put a question.

I'm looking to buy a nuvi 760 or 765,or maybe an older 250(who misses some nice features like bluetooth and TMC) I'm just doubting wich to buy.

In earlier reviews, I noticed the 760 has some problems with the satelite build-in antenna and retrieveing the signal when the weather is cloudy.
can someone telle me more about this problem now days early 2009 or was this a "new product release" item who has been solved by now?

An other question I have is concerning the preparation from a trip on PC, and transfering this data to the GPS-unit.
I did read some reviews where they say it is not that simpe, and you need to BUY a programm?
what about this? true?
or is there a place where the needed software can be down loaded.

thanks
Kris

Re: Garmin Nuvi 760

As far as which to purchase, lay out the specifications side by side and pick the one that meets your needs/expectations.

I've never noticed my 760 having a problem acquiring satellites in any weather, so may have been early release problem that has been fixed.

As far as planning trips, I bring my GPS inside and plan the trips on it.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 760

m3incorp - for how long time do you have your 760? the reviews i'm talking about seem to be from the early model release dates upto spring 2008.
this seemed to be (of has been) a worldwide problem, from US Over europe to Austrailie and New Zealand.

About the specification, I know what I want but was afraid and therefore questioning the performances from the models.
as i did read,,,
minus on 760 and 250 was the acquisition from the satellites (because of a change in the used hardware comparing to older models and streepilots)

if you have no problems and some more users can confirm the improved quality,,, this will make it more easy for me to make my choice.

thanks a lot

Re: Garmin Nuvi 760

krisBelgium, welcome to the site
I have a 750, not a 760, so the units are not identical. I added an external antenna to increase sensitivity indoors, but never had a problem with satellite acquisition in my car, only in my house.

Creating routes on a PC works fine with free software (MapQuest, MapSource from Garmin, GoogleEarth, etc. The caveat is that the GPS will "optimize" the route, whether you want it to or not. Some tweaking of the route may be necessary once you have the route on the GPS.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 760

Hi I bought mine right after Thanksgiving and it had the latest software. I've been happy with it and friends have bought the same model after hands-on experience with mine. For the money $199 Amazon.com it's hard to beat. I've had the free 2009.2 map upgrade installed since March.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 760

I purchased a 760 in January. I have been quite pleased at how well it received satellites. I can even sometimes get partial reception indoors.
