Nuvi 500 vs. 205 + Topo maps?

Can anyone explain the functional difference between a Nuvi 205 with the Garmin Topo software downloaded vs. the nuvi 500? The device is to be used primarily for road trips/off-roading. Would the 205 require switching out a card or anything to switch from road maps to off-road topo maps? The 205 + software can be had much cheaper than the 500, plus I can apply the topo maps to subsequent units I might buy. But if it's going to be a big hassle to switch modes on the 205, I'll stick with the 500. Any advice appreciated.

There are a lot of differences between those. The 500 supports routes (preplanned routes). It has twice the battery life and is waterproof. Check out the specs tabs for each device on Garmin's site. I would choose the 500 if it was my choice.

Are the topo maps really different from other Garmin maps? I thought they were all "one (or two) devices only"?

The preloaded Topo maps are the same as the ones you buy. Just like the preloaded city level maps are the same as the ones you buy separately.

Re: Nuvi 500 vs. 205 + Topo maps?

I am in the process now of adding Garmin topo 2008 to a 2 gig chip in a Nuvi 205.
I'll let you know how it goes, and works out.

Re: Nuvi 500 vs. 205 + Topo maps?

The topo map will show if you unclik the Metro Map.
It doesn't show the green background with elevation lines like a hand held will, but...... it does show the elevations, brooks, etc.
It does show roads with street names like the etrex HCx does running the map.
I haven't tried the entering of an address as of yet, and doing a go to.
I'll try that tomorrow. I am hoping it will work in topo mode well for driving on the dirt back roads. With the option of unselecting topo, and selecting metro for road stuff....Then i can use the etrex HCx when on foot......
Weeeell have to wait to see......
