Mapsource Install Problem

This is a complicated problem to explain. I have been using Garmins for a number of years, so I have a lot of old mapping products installed under Mapsource, including Roads & Rec, Metroguide, and City Select. Everything was installed under the D:\Program Files\Garmin directory, and was working just fine.

Today I installed City Navigator NT from the DVD. It just did the entire install without asking me where to put it, and what it did was to put the maps and other subdirectories under C:\Garmin, but when it installed the actual Mapsource software, it put that in the D:\Program Files\Garmin directory, overwriting my previous installation.

Now when I try to run Mapsource, I get the error dialog "There is a problem with the Product 2 installation. Please re-install Product 2 and start Mapsource again".

Notwithstanding the buggy error message reference to "Product 2", is there any hope to fix this with a simple reinstall? Just for fun I tried copying the map directory over under the D:\Product Files\Garmin directory, but it still will not run. I already went through the unlock process during the installation, so I'm not sure what would happen to that either if I try reinstalling. I also don't want to lose my old maps since I still use them with my older GPS-V.

Any suggestions?

Re: Mapsource Install Problem

If you are using Mapsource v6.14.1, you need to tweak the mapset appearing under Garmin in the Windows Registry from Hex to Decimal and after that is done, the Mapsource will work.

Re: Mapsource Install Problem

Have you tried a reinstall? I run the older software with mine as well and haven't had any trouble.

Re: Mapsource Install Problem

I solved this today after looking at the registry. I found a set of registry keys named HKLM\Software\Garmin\MapSource\Products\1, \2, and \3. Turns out that these were related to the (very old) Roads & Recreation maps that I used with my old GPS-IIIPlus.

So that was the "Product 2" that the error message was referring to. I deleted the unnecessary keys and MapSource started up and is working OK now. And, I can still use all my older map products that I need for my GPS-V.
