Garmin & Boeing

My recent flight (last week) I decided to pack my Nuvi 660 in my carry-on and use it in flight. Pretty simple to do, just ensure you set the GPS for "off-road" use and choose the "pedestrian" mode.

It also helps to change the map orientation to 2D w/North up and set the map detail pretty low. I haven't figured out how to post pictures on this forum but have some screen shots showing altitude and ground speed on the satellite map screen and a position showing the normal map view.

Re: Garmin & Boeing

I find it really helps long flights become more entertaining. I've taken my 76CSx and 76S on flights. The high speeds and elevation is interesting but being able to look out the window and figure out what city you see or what lake you're flying over is just too cool!

Until the flight attendants tell you to turn it off...

No idea why they think a RECEIVER is going to interfere with the airplane...

They usually announce when it's OK to use portable electronic devices EXCEPT those which transmit. Some carriers have stricter policies than others.

This site lists which allow GPS to be used in-flight and which do not:
Airlines which APPROVE/DISPROVE GPS use in Flight

All electronic devices emit noise. I used to work for a company which certified both EMC (Electronic Magnetic Compliance) radiation and immunity (ever wonder what all those "marks" you see on the underside of computer mice, keyboards and covers for hard drives & CD-ROMs are)?
During the critical ascent and descent of air travel they will ask that all devices be turned off.

Re: Garmin & Boeing

I've found if you ask the pilot before take off, some will say they are ok even if the airlines says not. Worth asking anyway.
