difference between streetpilot and nuvi

I'm looking to upgrade my Garmin 2620 GPS, it has a few issues. I'm trying to figure out the difference between the nuvi and street pilot series. I've read all the specs but one thing I'm not seeing is storage. I was under the impression that the Streetpilot series holds the entire US map and directions (only because I've done searches for locations of interest and get results in other states like texas and california) on it while the nuvi only contains selected areas of the US and that you have to change the area's on the unit depending on where your traveling. I cover the entirety of Florida, and Georgia for work and need to be able to have both on their at the same time. And if the Streetpilot series does hold the entire US on it, that would be preferable since I do leave these states on a semi regular basis and not changing maps would be great. The only real features in the unit I am looking for are 3d view, text to speech and thats about it really. Other features are nice, but I don't see myself using them. The voice command would be nice, but not worth the $600 tag that I've been seeing on it. Thanks in advance for the help

Re: difference between streetpilot and nuvi

The difference is that the nüvi is thinner, and a newer model.

They have very similar feature sets. The nüvis hold the whole US also. It is possible the low-end nüvis do not... but I think they all do.

Re: difference between streetpilot and nuvi

Hey Sepia,

Just to possibly help, I just bought a C550 Streetpilot. I have typed in different areas of the US and have not found it to not have it.

At a price tag of under $200 it does a fantastic job. The only note on the documentation I have found is that it does not cover Mexico.

Hi sepia, welcome to the site!

Make sure you take a good look at the feature sets of the Nuvis. They are not like the older devices. Until some of the more recent Nuvis, many of the features you have in the 2620 weren't there. Don't expect to be able to customize menus and pages. They just barely got the newest Nuvi's using track logs and the ability to add routes.

Andy, you're right. I wasn't thinking about the customization thing as a feature set - but I can't think what else it could be called!

The nüvi is not customizable much at all. The Streetpilot is.
