Multiple mapsets on a single SDHC card

Hi all! I just got a Nuvi 760 and am loving it.

I also just got a 16GB SDHC card for it to hold my various maps. Given that these cards us the FAT32 file system format, the biggest file on the card cannot exceed 4GB.

Now in mapsource when I try to create a custom mapset with the maps I want to include in it, the resuting mapset file size exceeds 4GB. So I am now looking for info on whether theres any way to have multiple mapset files on the same SD card so that I can have the maps of my choice all loaded on the card and not have to swap out SD cards from the unit.

I know the map file on is named gmapsupp.img. Is there any way to have multiple files with different name and have the Nuvi recognize them all.

Thanks much in advance for all the help and insight.

I don't think you can have multiple mapset files on one card. There is now way to specify which mapset file you are currently using.

Re: Multiple mapsets on a single SDHC card

Garmin says my 750 can only use cards up to 4G. It doesn't say files of that size, but cards that size.

Are you sure your 760 can read from the 16G card? That could be useful.

Re: Multiple mapsets on a single SDHC card

Yes I am able to read data from the 16GB SDHC card. I loaded some music, audio books and one mapset on it and was able to access all of them without any problems. I have not, however tried to load it to the max capacity but I am pretty sure I was over the 4GB mark.

These cards usually have the FAT32 format which means that any given file on the card cannot exceed 4GB (2^32 bytes) which is a limitation of the FAT32 format. Also mapsource complains too if you add enough maps to go over the 4GB mark during the creation of the mapset(s).

I too had consulted Garmin tech support and they had told me that they had tested with 4GB SDHC cards but expected the higher capacity cards to work too hence the reason I purchased it.

Now I am trying to figure out a convinient way to partition the card into smaller 4GB partitions and formatting each partition with FAT32 and trying to get Windows XP to recognize all FOUR partitions as unique drives but havent had much luck on this front yet. Looking for insights/ides.

Thanks much.
Later,
