Problems upgrading maps to 2008

I have recently
obtained my 'Map Update 2008 City Navigator Europe NT' DVD as
a free upgrade for my new nuvi 350T. Trying to update the maps
using the setup program on the DVD, results in the following
error, after connecting to the Garmin server, prompting me to
accept the license agreement, and prompting me to input my
map 'product key' (green sticker). I get the following error

"errror contacting the Garmin server, please try again later.
Contact Garmin support if problem persists"

I have downloaded the 'Webupdater' as suggested below, and run it
with my 350T. I can successfully connect to the garmin server and
update my unit. My unit had already been updated to firmware 4.8
and is uptodate. I have successfully updated my GTMxx traffic
software, using the Webupdater.

Is there a way to update the maps without an internet connection (offline)
[ as I already have the update map DVD and the unlock keys]

Thanks

Welcome to the site Purak

How did you get the update DVD? was it from Garmin or the place you bought it?
Have you registered for a mygarmin account?

sorry for all the questions...just trying to figure out what could be the issue.

Re: Problems upgrading maps to 2008

Hi Max,
Thanks for your reply. I have registered my unit on the garmin
site, and was told that I qualify for a free upgrade (to the 2008 maps),
which they sent me the DVD of.

I have also successfully upgraded my unit firmware/software online
(on the same PC I am trying to do my maps update). My unit software/firmware is now uptodate.

Thanks

So the problem is the map update program is not seeing your internet connection?

Are you using some type of firewall maybe?

That explains it then. I am indeed behind a firewall.
Is there a way to do the upgrade offline?

Thanks

Re: Problems upgrading maps to 2008

I cannot find any info on the ports Garmin would like to have on your side of the firewall, so this might sound kind of rediculous, but it's worked for me with other applications.

Try closing applications, then going into your control panel and disabling your active network card. Only do this if you know what you're doing and know how to fix it please

Once that is done, try starting up the application and seeing what occurs. It may just think you have an internet connection so thats why it's holding out for it?

Otherwise, is your IE browser configured to work around the firewall if need be? or is it setup for a proxy?

I guess Im asking lamest question last, but is this from work or home? (one you might have control of a firewall, one you wont )

Re: Problems upgrading maps to 2008

I am not sure if this is using the Garmin Communicator, but I did find some info for going around it:

Quote:
The Subversion client can go through a proxy, if you configure it to do so. First, edit your "servers" configuration file to indicate which proxy to use. The files location depends on your operating system. On Linux or Unix it is located in the directory "~/.subversion". On Windows it is in "%APPDATA%\Subversion". (Try "echo %APPDATA%", note this is a hidden directory.)
There are comments in the file explaining what to do. If you don't have that file, get the latest Subversion client and run any command; this will cause the configuration directory and template files to be created.
Example : Edit the 'servers' file and add something like :

c:\progra~1\Subversion\servers
[
Code:
]global
http-proxy-host = your.proxy.name
http-proxy-port = 3128

Re: Problems upgrading maps to 2008

Hi, I've had exactly the same problem. Garmin Tech Support sent me a DVD, but this did not solve the problem either.

However, what I did was to disable all running programs including AV and firewall ... the go to IE7 > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings, the UNCHECK the box which enalbles IE7 to automatically detect your internet settings.

After doing this, the DVD worked fine - although it does take a couiple of hours or so, as it first has to copy the DVD files to your hard drive, and then from your hard drive onto the Garmin.

Hope this helps!
