Failure of new nuvi 750

Hello

I recently purchased a nuvi 750. WOrked fine for a couple of trips, but on my last road trip I stopped for a coffee. I had the cigarette lighter plug inserted into a 12V outlet that switches on and off with the ignition. As usual, the 750 beeped and alerted me that it was going to shut off in nn seconds, offering me the usual options to shut off or stay on. My routine in the past has been to hit one of those buttons, depending on whether I was going to leave it idle or make some settings.

THis time, however, I just let it shut itself off. That was the last time I saw a display until more than 24 hours later. Pressing the on-off switch all the way to the left did nothing; the display was blank. On 12v or off, the result was the same.

THis evening I was preparing to pack the unit up to ship to Garmin when I inadvertently pressed the power button to the left, and the thing turned on.

Anyone else observed this?

I am a bit paranoid about this. I knew the route home from this stop; it's one I have driven a hundred times. What if the thing decides to go Tango Uniform on a trip where getting lost is not an attractive option and I don't know my way around? I just don't trust the thing, and it's headed back to store or Garmin.

Thanks
Jim

Re: Failure of new nuvi 750

I've had this with my Nuvi 200 when I didnt hold the button long enough and it shut itself off. But I am confused because I thought Left was off and Right was on? unless hte 750 uses a different switch?

Re: Failure of new nuvi 750

Max, the 750 is a spring loaded switch. Normal position is in the center. Pushing it left toggles it on (if off) or off (if on).

Switch action is simply push left, release. It returns to center.

jimcarroll, I'm very sorry to hear that happened with your 750, but have no advice. I've never heard of that symptom before.

Re: Failure of new nuvi 750

I just purchased a Garmin Nuvi 750 from Costco online. I ordered it Wed., Nov. 5th & it arrived this afternoon (Friday, Nov. 7th, '08). I also purchased the kit that includes the wall adapter, friction pad, etc. I programmed the Nuvi with the favorite addresses I normally use. I put the unit into my car & it turned on. I came back a few hours later & the damn thing was dead. I looked at the fuse & it looks fine. No break in it. When I took the fuse out, the little spring inside the cig adapter fell out. Is that normal. Does the screw free falling out make a difference?

Re: Failure of new nuvi 750

I jump started my truck with the Nuvi 750 plugged in. I didn't respond to anything for about a week, then I tried again and it worked fine.

Romeosantiago, all the cigarette lighter plugs I have that include an internal fuse work like that. Nothing holds them together, when you take the fuse out, everything falls out.
