Stuck pixel on new Nuvi 760..are they common? exchange it?

Hey all,
This is my first post on this message board. Hopefully it will be helpful.

I just recieved a new nuvi 760 from costco. I really like it. The only problem is that it has a stuck red pixel on the screen. It's really not noticeable while driving, but once you're aware that it's hard to forget that it's there.

So, at this point it seems like my best option would be to exchange it through Garmin. Among other things, I'm a little concerned that another unit might have a stuck pixel-or perhaps a couple of stuck pixels. Here are some questions I have for you all:

1. Have you all found dead or stuck pixels to be common with nuvis or GPS units in general? Are units with dead/stuck pixels fairly common, or are they rare? I know they occur with laptops often...but laptops have many more pixels...

2. Have you had experience with returning a product to Garmin? What prompted you to return it? How long did it take to get the replacement?

3. What would you all recommend that I do?

Thanks for your replies,
Matt

Re: Stuck pixel on new Nuvi 760..are they common? exchange it?

Welcome to the site Matt

I'd just go back to Costco and get a new unit.

If you send out to Garmin, as I understand they typically check your unit and if the repair is something requiring splitting the case on the unit, they replace it with another unit that has already been refurbished. With a 760 being so new, they may not have a refurb 'pool' yet, but you can never be too sure. You could always call and ask though

Regarding frequency of this type of issue, I've owned upside of 10 Garmin touchscreen models and never had any screen issues. The oldest of these is a (bought it this way) refurbished Streetpilot from 2004 and it's still chugging along with only minor sensitivity bugs.

So, maybe I might contact Garmin to see what they could do, but I'm picky and if I buy something 'as new' I want it that way. It would irk me that it's been tampered with.
You paid for a new 760, so thats what I would want to end up with. Let Costco deal with the RTV side while you enjoy your new device without any red pixels.

p.s. I've dealt with dead pixels (not on any GPS) and that's something I may consider tolerating...but a red one would irk the heck out of me!

Hi Matt, welcome!

I've returned a couple of mine to Garmin. They usually returned them in just a few days once the repair was done (week total maybe; it's been a few years).

If I were you, I'd just take it back to Costco and get a new one. They have a simple return policy.

Im assuming you bought it on costco.com? ..you can return to the warehouse and they'll credit your purchase means. So technically you could just go order another one off the site today then return your busted one when you get the new one so your not without.

Just un register your current one with Garmin first...

Re: Stuck pixel on new Nuvi 760..are they common? exchange it?

Thanks for the replies, all.

The problem with returning it to costco is that they don't do exchanges, and so I'll have to order another one off their site...and it wouldn't be able to get here before this weekend, when I leave to work at a camp for the summer.

Soooooo....what I might do is return the unit to costco and get another from circuit city. Costco offers a 100% return policy...and circuit city seems to have the 760 for the cheapest price(best buy has it cheaper, but it's not in stock anywhere). After all is said and done, it'll cost the same amount as costco.

So that's what I might end up doing. Any advice/suggestions are more than welcome.

Aha, the critical factor - time.

2 choices:
- Go to the local costco and return it for the Nuvi 680 (in stock and 299$) has MSN Direct
- Ship it to my house, then tell me what camp you're going to work at and I'll re-ship it to ya or deliver it some weekend.

They have the 680? I couldn't find it on their site. Thanks for the offer.

Re: Stuck pixel on new Nuvi 760..are they common? exchange it?

Remember...costco.com and iss (in-store-stock) are rarely one in the same

I believe the Costco in Avon, Ma. has the 680's in stock. I'll tell you that MSN direct with it's gas price data is coming in more handy than I'd imagined too

You're very welcome let me know if you need a hand.

Re: Stuck pixel on new Nuvi 760..are they common? exchange it?

Okay, so here's my story:
I ordered my Garmin Nuvi 765T via online at www.tigerdirect.ca for $229.97 (CAD) plus tax, to total $259.87 (with free UPS shipping). I ordered on Dec. 12, 2009 and got it Dec. 16, 2009. My wife opened it as a Christmas gift and when we tested it on our dashboard on Dec. 27, 2009....behold a missing pixel, very annoying, right in the middle of the screen. Turning it off and on, still there. This indeed is a product defect....suggest exchanging for anyone with this problem. Somehow it reminded me of that Seinfeld episode where George purchases a white Cashmere sweater for Elaine with a red mark on it. This GPS product was new and not refurbished. I was so happy to buy it and then this sh*t had to happened. Doesn't Garmin check their products???? I'm debating whether I should buy Garmin after returning this one to TigerDirect (Newmarket, Ontario, Canada).

I would return it and stick with Garmin. This thread is 2 years old so I am guessing that the missing pixel problem is not too common.
