Nuvi 200 is dead "no detailed maps found" error

Hello. My Garmin is not working. I have an error that says "No detailed maps found that support routing. The Nuvi cannot be used without them." I have had the unit about 1 month. Recently the battery was low so I had it on the car charger while I was using it. After arriving at my destination, I turned the car off. When I got back to the car, the unit started running a screen initialization set up. I did not previously have to do this even the first time I used it. After this it ran the user config set up again -- Country- time zone, etc. After this completed, the error message came up and has been there ever since. I have downloaded an updated version of the maps but when I ran them on the unit, it said it could not load because it could not find the previous version of maps. I have wiped the unit, made sure the charge was full and left it plugged into a internet pc overnight but I still get the same error. Can anyone help me? Garmin support is making me wait more than an hour so far. Thanks.

Re: Nuvi 200 is dead "no detailed maps found" error

Well at least I am contributing something to this forum. I finally got through to Garmin support (after 85 minutes of holding) and they gave me an unlock code that fixed my unit. Word to the wise, register your units. It makes repairing easier.

It was slow at work so I just left the phone on speaker and waited while I worked. I had to get my unit fixed. House shopping in unfamiliar neighborhoods.

I had the same problem with my Nuvi 200W after performing a hard reset (hold right bottom of screen while switching on). I did this because I imported all the POIs to my favourites and there is no way to delete them all in one go except for performing this procedure. I think I was supposed to remove the SD card before performing the Hard reset, because when I switched the unit on after this it gave the error and would not connect via USB. I inserted the Map unlock CD and as I was busy browsing the CD I noticed that the error screen disappeared and the PC connection via USB was established. It seems that this happens after it has been connected for a minute or so. I ran the Map Install.exe and it discovered the Nuvi and installed the maps. I then ran the POI updater software and it installed all the POIs (lots of forums on this) and restarted the Nuvi. It gave me a "cannot unlock maps" notification but seemed to perform well. I removed the SD and it booted fine. I then copied the maps to the SD as well and it is now running 100%

Message Body:
When I switch my Nuvi 200 on it says "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them". Please send me unlock codes with instructions. I am surprised this is such a big problem and your company has posted no solution to this. There are so many people complaining about the same problem on the internet. I am in a new city and this piece of junk won't work. Please do a call back if you can't tackle this satisfactorily ASAP. Your customer support works only 8am-5pm CST. How can i call in for 2-3 hours while I'm at office?

Re: Nuvi 200 is dead "no detailed maps found" error

Or, while you have a WORKING UNIT, just create a folder and back the entire Nuvi up on your computer. Be sure to include the hidden files. For "disaster recovery", just "select all" from that folder and copy/paste back to the root directory of the Nuvi. It works. I've done it before...more than once...

It's been said time and time again. BACK YOUR UNITS UP.
