How is Mapsource loaded onto pc

I have read many-many of the posts on this sight but can't find the answer to my question, so thougtht I'd ask.
I received my Nuvi 760 on 5/14/08. Cabled it to my PC for the first time on 5/15/08. It asked me if I wanted to register it -- Yes. At the completion of this process, it told me that there was an update available for my map. I downloaded the map and saved the file to my pc. I then ran the .exe file and map installed into my Nuvi ok. At the end of the install, it told me that it was placing a copy on my pc. This surprised me as I didn't know it was going to do this. It didn't even tell me which directory it was going to install the file. After the install, I didn't think anymore about this pc install.
I then start reading this forum and have found that "Mapsouce on your computer" is used often. So I decided to try and find if what happend as described above did put a copy on my pc. I finally found "C:\Garmin\CNNANT2009." Is this the "Mapsource on my pc" that everyone mentiones? There doesn't seem to be an executable file associated with this folder. How do I get into it in order to set up routes, waypoints, etc? Thanks.

Mapsource is a free program from Garmin, located here: Garmin: Updates & Downloads

Once you download it and install it, it will see the map you mention on your PC.

Welcome to the site!

sloguy!

dav hit the bullseye on that one again!

Let us know if it works. The map update that you got may only be an "update" and not contain the full map data that is in City Nav software when you buy it. If it only contains the data that has changed since the prior release, you may not see it inside Mapsource. Did the 760 come with a City Nav 2008 version DVD?

I would be interested to here if it works.

Re: How is Mapsource loaded onto pc

Thank you, thank you, thank you both Dav and Andy for your reply. I downloaded and installed the Mapsource file from Garmin. It seems to have worked ok. Now all I have to do is figure out how to use it. To your question, Andy. No disc came with my 760. The box states that the device comes "preloaded (with) City Navigator North America NT (2008)." I added the paren information. So, guess I'm now setup to start expanding my Nuvi's functionality.
Side comment: I tried earlier to intall a downloaded POI of "Rest_Stops_Complete_Routes" (contained a csv file, a mp3 file, and a bmp file). Used Garmin's POI Loader to install on Nuvi. All seemed to go ok, but I couldn't find the results on my device, not in Favorites, POI/Auto Services/ or Extras. I thought it would be neat, [as I'm 67 and need to potty more than I'd like to admit (but I still can hold it longer than my lovely wife)] to be warned or should I say advised that there is a "rest stop" not far aheard. Well, I'll get back into this area later on after mastering Mapsource. Thanks again.
