Alternative ways to connect the Etrex to the computer?

I do not have a 9 pin serial port on my home computer, and the software does not see the unit when attaching to the computer with a cable that converts from the 9 pin to a usb port.

Does some one have a way to accomplish this?

Thanks

SeeYa

Re: Alternative ways to connect the Etrex to the computer?

Hey David,

I've seen these:
GPSW: Garmin USB Power/Data Cable - Power from USB (Buy/Full Details)

But I am curious what type of usb/serial adapter you have? I have used one of these with a 276 and it worked fine. But I had to search a few to find the right one. The kind I ended up with was a Keyspan (link below
Keyspan | USB High Speed Serial Adapter

IMO they are the best usb/serial adapter maker out there...and are about 20$

The first link makes it look like my problem is a software/driver issue.

The second link looks a lot like the cable I have.

Re: Alternative ways to connect the Etrex to the computer?

Hmm, a few more questions...

#Have you connected this to any pc before?
#Are all your serial port settings on the PC or adapter set to 9600 8-N-1?
#Is the software you are trying to connect to, Garmin Mapsource?
#If not Garmin Mapsource, what is the name of the application?

Depending on the application type would depend on the interface protocol that the eTrex requires to connect to the PC. To check this you can go to the unit menu and enter:

MAIN MENU> SETUP> INTERFACE>

Is it currently set to GARMIN or NMEA IN/OUT?

Re: Alternative ways to connect the Etrex to the computer?

ok,hmm...when you used this on the other pc, was it with the serial/USB adapter or did that pc have a serial port?

Just trying to figure out if this is an adapter issue or of issue.
I work with gear that has a serial console port and if I dont use a keyspan adapter weird things occur. I went through about 7 or so before I found it.

If you want to try it, and promise to send it back I'll send you mine to try.

Re: Alternative ways to connect the Etrex to the computer?

On my work computer I have the proper port. Thank you for your offer but I think I will send away for for one of the two items you pointed out.

The real urgency is now passed as the ride is in the morning.

And the fact that I do not have the routes loaded will not get in the way of a great days riding.

I am going up into the middle of nowhere Wisconsin for the "Slimey Crud Run" a twice a year event that always brings out a huge number of bikes. There are some great roads to ride to get there. The bikes gather in the morning at a cross road and then split up to ride to a second spot. In between are some tremendously twisty roads.

In case you want to see a bit of what it is like here is my video compiling several trip to this event....
Where to Ride #1 - Slimey Crud Run

11 minutes long with the roads book ended by the two gatherings

Thanks Again

I've used this one from IOGear with my 76S and 12 Map. Never had any trouble with it.

IOGEAR - GUC232A - USB to Serial/PDA Converter Cable
