Garmin GPSMAP 76CSX Manual Waypoint Entry?

I've been a Garmin 76 user for about 7 years and just bought a 76CSX. The instructions on manual entry of a waypoint seem about as clear as mud. I know how to mark a current waypoint and how to mark one on the displayed map. How about just getting a set of waypoint coordinates from a friend and entering them manually like adding two or three just before a fishing trip. I loaded all of my existing waypoint by transferring them from my 76 via the provided mapsource software. I just can't quite see how to manually enter a couple of new waypoints. What am I missing here. Please feel free to refer to the owners manual by page and paragraph in your reply. The manual does state there are three ways to enter waypoints and that manual is one of them, then it doesn't go on to explain how. This is probably one of those things thats looking me right in the face and I feel that the answer must be so simple that I just am over looking it. Thank you for your answers in advance.

To enter your own lat/long, hold down Mark while on the map page. It works the same as saving the current position as a waypoint. But when the screen comes up to enter the waypoint information, move to the coordinate position and change the lat/lon to the ones you want.

Andy,

Thanks for your reply. I think the instruction manual could be a little clearer on this. I bet I'm not the only person that had problems with this.

I agree. I've always had complaints about the manuals for every GPS I own. Things like they tell you a description of a particular function, without any real detail on what it does, how it works, why you might want to use it. A good example is the WAAS function. On my older GPS the manual just tells you how to turn it on and off, but not what it does when it's in either mode.

Is there a quick refresher on how to set a way point for a planned trip? Thanks, Loy

Sorry Andy, I'm back with another question. I need to enter information such as 33`47'22.2"N 106`17'36.9"W but it does not allow me to enter all the information ? I need to get right on target and will be doing so all over the world one day soon and really need to know? I could enter the same information this way if I could do that? 33.789506 -106.293587 I tried entering just what it would allow and could not get anywhere near where I need to be? Still confused. The manual and video only show how to enter some Numbers but does not elaborate .
Thanks

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 76CSX Manual Waypoint Entry?

Try this.

Press Menu until you get to the Main Menu
Select Setup
Select Units
Position Format field (top of the screen)
Change this to hddd°mm'ss.s''

That should put it in the correct format to enter N 33° 47' 22.2" and W 106° 17' 36.9"

Go to the Map Page
Hold down the Enter button until the Mark Waypoint screen comes up. Move the selector to the waypoint area and change it to what you want. Select Map after selecting OK from the small dialog box that you use to enter the coordinates to see if it's the right location.

Andy, you are the very best you could never know how much this helps me. I sure do than you and If brains was gasoline and I had a motorcycle I would not have enough gass to get half way around a BB.
Thanks

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 76CSX Manual Waypoint Entry?

I didn't find it very intuitive either. Sitting at a dock, on a friend's boat, with his GPS I wanted to plot a tricky route through the 30,000 Islands. Without the manual, I discovered a way to enter a new waypoint by referencing an existing one (bearing and distance), but I couldn't correct the lat/long using co-ordinates I picked off the chart.

To enter a completely new waypoint, it didn't seem logical to mark my current position (miles away) and then edit it.

But now I know ;-)

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 76CSX Manual Waypoint Entry?

Hi GeoBible,

I wasn't sure if you understood how to get from 33.789506 to N 33° 47' 22.2"

The long, tedious way is to use modulo division.

33.789506 = 33 whole degrees, with .789506 remainder
60 x 00.789506 = 47.370360 minutes
60 x 00.370360 = 22.2216 seconds

Some scientific calculators will do it for you. If you are getting your co-ordinates from different sources in different formats (there's at least one more) then you might not want to keep changing the GPS' preferences.

Since a minute is a naut. mile (6080 feet), a second is about 100 feet, so one decimal place (10 feet) is plenty.

I agree, however you might also d/load the 60CSx manual, as 60 and 76CSx unit are nearly identical and the 76 manual is a mere 56 pages, while the 60 manual is 101 pages. Go figure?
