GPSmap 60CSx USB power/interface cable

I just purchased a Map 60 which came with a USB PC interface cable. I noticed, unlike my last etrex unit, that when the unit was connected to the PC via the cable, it runs on external power (not batteries). It would stand to reason that this same USB interface cable could be plugged into the USB port on a 12 volt power inverter and used in a vehicle. Anyone have thoughts on this?? I don't want to fry the unit but I also don't want to spend $40 on a car adapter if its unnecessary.
