problems with nuvi 200

I've had my unit since July 2007 and really have not used my unit much. (Like may be once per week)

However, when I was still in my 30 day trial period, I found the unit went 'crazy'. Meaning, when I was standing still, the unit was showing that I'm driving through the streets, woods, etc.. at 190 mph.

I called tech support and they told me about the reset button, which fixed the unit for a little while.

Well, this weekend, as I was going the the location about 30 miles away, the unit kept loosing me. It would tell me that I'm OFF the road on which I was actually going. I had to press reset about 3 times before I finally got to my destination.

Going back from that place, my Nuvi 200 tracked my location pretty good up to my home address, when suddenly, it told me that I'm in the location in the next town and started recalculating the route.

Today, in downtown Chicago the unit was telling me that I was all over the map, when i'm just standing still.

What's causing this problem? Is this a hardware or a software issue?

Tech support told me to update the software version, and I plan on doing this. But is anyone else having the same issue? What else could it be?

Thanks.

Re: problems with nuvi 200

I'd have to guess hardware issue. Definitely not normal.

We've discussed speed discrepancy issues, and minor location oddities, but yours sounds like an actual device problem.

Don't you feel better now? You're special!

I would say unless you're vehicle happens to be an AWACS ground unit or a satellite broadcast vehicle left on, there is something foul in the hardware.

I have heard of a master reset fixing similar issues on the Nuvi's but that is pretty bad.

Re: problems with nuvi 200

I just purchased the Nuvi 200 last week (7/7/2008) and immediately went thru the software upgrade and also download/loaded the latest map. On Fri morning, when i was driving on a local road with nothing around that would block the satellate signals, my Nuvi 200 suddenly went crazy. By that I mean the little car icon in the center of the map is flying over the map with speed over 200 mph. I shut the system off and/or press the reset button on the unit. But, the same problem re-occurred a few times. It was ok mostly this week till this morning when I was on my way to work the same problem shows up again. I was driving 196 mph.
I am going to do the Master Reset (by holding down the lower right hand screen corner) and see if the problem will come back again. Other than this little crazy behavior, i like the simple design of Nuvi 200. I will keep everyone posted on the result. I wonder how many people see this problem?

thanks!

7/18/2008 - got a brand new replacement unit from BestBuy since the old one still acting like crazy after the master reset.
7/24/2008 - the new unit works nicely so far.

Interesting...I have seen some strangeness with the older units displaying insane ground speeds, but 200mph on a sirf enabled unit is a little odd.

I am curious to know if this is a particular issue with the nuvi 200 though
