I just bought the nuvi 750...

I just bought the nuvi 750. I was registering the unit and saw "mapsource unlock". What does that mean? or do?

Re: I just bought the nuvi 750...

Taperman,

It took me awhile to figure out how Garmin operates. I don't have it all down yet, but...

The nüvi 750 comes with maps preloaded, so they are already "unlocked". But when you register at Garmin, you can find what your "unlock" code is.

When you download the free Mapsource program to your PC, it won't run until you have an "unlocked" map to look at.

I was not able to use the map from my GPS, so I called Garmin and they sold me a "replacement" disk for $21 ($15 + $6 S/H). Now I have the whole thing on my PC. (many get the disk free by whining).

Each time you buy a new map (say a TOPO map of the Natl Parks) then you need a NEW unlock code to be able to use it with Mapsource or your GPS.

It's all kind of a pain. Garmin is trying maximize income at the expense of an easy user experience. They want to make sure any map they sell can only be used on one device, no matter how many you own, you pay to put the same map on each of them.

Check with sydster here on this site. He says he got the disk free:

Thank you for the info dav. I'm still playing around with it. I'm sure I'll be posting more questions. Thanks again.

Re: I just bought the nuvi 750...

Here is a comparison on the Garmin site if it helps:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare....ompare=compare

If you have the $$ I would go for the 660 or 680 over the 750 I think. Only because they offer more interactivity (traffic, msnD,etc) whereas with the 750 you still need to buy the msn direct plugin.

The multi poi route addition on the 750 is a nice touch and it does appear to be a better overall unt and of course newer which means they have refined it's size as well.

Comparing GPS units is hard. Max and I disagree here, as our needs differ.

To me, traffic, MSN and bluetooth are all of no value. Whereas I needed the multi-route capability. So, for me, the 750 made much more sense than the 660/680/760/etc.

totally .

I'll admit it, 99% of the time I use my gps' like a timer just to tell me how long it's really going to take me to get around my route of destinations. The technology added into that just helps to keep that number more accurate.

The Bluetooth - in the case of the Zumo =priceless. The bluetooth piped into my helmet and connecting my phone/media bridge = priceless. In the car, I could care less. The BT just happens to follow around the other feature sets I'm interested in.

I've been told I'm a little eccentric with my affliction for electronic devices. I'd disagree, but I have to go dust and inventory my garmin boxes now.
