Nuvi 660 navigation issue ?

Hello everyone,

I am having an annoying issue with my Nuvi 660 that hopefully someone can shed some light on. It's currently set to "Quickest Time" . I live in between 2 major hiways in my State - they pretty much run parallel east to west but the more Northern one takes a turn to the North - and usually has MUCH less traffic so I tend to favor it.

So here's my problem - even if I am right NEXT to the more Northern hiway the GPS is telling me to get off of EVERY exit in order to go onto the other hiway. If I don't exit, it says "recalculating" and then has me drive to the next exit to get off.

Why is this happening ?? It is SOO annoying !!!

Can anyone shed some light on this ??

Thanks !

You should be able to tell it to avoid the other highway.

I haven't used the Nuvi specifically, but there should be a place where you can manage roads to avoid when routing. Check the manual to find where specifically on the Nuvi.

I guess it's possible the Nuvi doesn't have that feature, but I don't know why they would leave that out...

Re: Nuvi 660 navigation issue ?

The 660 doesn't have road avoidance per road that I have found. It will let you avoid roads based on type.

Alexnn, try hitting detour and see if it will route you on the other road. Also try setting it to something other than "quickest time".

This is one problem with the 660. You don't have much control over what roads it chooses on a day to day basis. You can't set it to always avoid a certain road. You can email Garmin and request the feature. It is something they could add in a software update. Eventually the 660 should give up on routing you back to the other road and tell you there is a better route available. Mine does this if I keep ignoring it's route.

Yet another reason to hang onto my 2720.

Re: Nuvi 660 navigation issue ?

Yes, I was really annoyed to find this feature lacking in my nuvi 750. My totally obsolete laptop Co-Pilot software offered it! Why oh why did Garmin make their nuvi SO "idiot proof"?

When I set waypoints to force it to use the road I want, it takes me a random number of miles on that road past my waypoint, then has me do a u-turn and go back to before my waypoint, then follow the road I was just on to continue toward my destination.

Letter to Garmin is definitely a good idea. I'll try to remember to do that.

Re: Nuvi 660 navigation issue ?

I think I may have figured it out, possible dumb mistake on my part - I drive a pickup truck so I have the vehicle set to "Truck" instead of "Car / Motorcycle" BUT.........the more Northern Hiway I referred to is in fact a "PARKWAY" with Cars only, "NO TRUCKS ALLOWED" - this could be why my 660 is trying to avoid it like the plague even when I pick a destination that is right off of it and I start offf right next to it.....

Re: Nuvi 660 navigation issue ?

That could be the reason. The truck setting is for commercial Semi type trucks, not pickups.

Re: Nuvi 660 navigation issue ?

Darn, I was just going to answer with that - as I did the same thing once while driving home with a ladder sticking up about 6' out of my truck bed so I wanted to avoid any low clearance areas and changed my vehicle to truck.

For about a month afterwards it drove me nuts anytime I left my house always telling me to go west to another main road out to the highway, I almost called Garmin to ask if their stuff was prone to viruses or something. Then one day smart me remembered what I did, changed it back, and all was well again

Glad to hear you got it figured out though, you should hopefully be ok now - BUT - you should still write a letter to Garmin asking about manual street removal from routing options
