Selecting street name

I'm currently using a TT 3rd but I am considering a switching brands, here is why. When I want to Navigate to an address my TT wants to know the city name first. The problem is, I live in a very rural area surrounded by numerous hamlets, villages, towns, etc. So quite often I don't know which city the street is in.

So, can anyone tell me do the Garmin units ask for the street name first? I'm hoping that if I tell it to navigate to "Main Street" it will show me all the "Main Streets" in my vicinity.

My Nuvi 660 asks for a city name first. I've never tried skipping it though. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Edit: Finally checked and there is a search all function to use instead of selecting a city.

Re: Selecting street name

My nuvi 750 asks for the city and the state, but has 3 buttons... "Spell City", "Change State/Province" and "search all".

It allowed me to search multiple cities, but only showed me matches within the state.

With the Nüvi 260 you touch to "Where To?" - Address - State (Colorado is shown in my case). Then you have the option to spell the city or search all within the state. Touch "Search All" and you put in the number, then spell the street. It brings up all the possibilities with that street and number.

First time I've used it... works pretty slick.

Re: Selecting street name

The other problem I've had with this TT is missing towns. On occasion I know approximately where the address is where I need to go, but I'm not sure what the fastest way would be from my location. If I browse the map I can see that neighbourhood, but the TT hasn't designated it as a town. So because the TT insists on knowing the town/city first, I can't use it to navigate to any of those streets!

This would not be a problem for anyone trying to navigate within major cities. But that's not my situation, I'm navigating from one country village to another. Based on the replies so far there are at least a couple of Garmin units with the capability to navigate without knowing the city. So it sounds like I'll be trading my TT for a Garmin.

Hmm, with the nuvi units you don't even need an address. If you can see it on the map, you just touch it and it will guide you there.

You also have the option of entering coordinates instead of an address if you have looked up the location on Google Earth or similar.

Re: Selecting street name

My TT will do that too, I can browse the map until I find the street I want then I can "navigate to". But the thing is, I have to zoom right down so all the street names will be displayed. But with a tiny 3.5" display it could take all day to browse the map before I find the street I need.

I'm an emergency services worker so I need to know how to get to an address now. I don't have the luxury of using the internet ahead of time to search google for directions, or coordinates, etc.

Re: Selecting street name

Yep, even the 4.3 inch nuvi screen is too small for that, really.

I use my GPS for fun, designing road trips and vacations, not for emergency use.

You need to set up a POI list of every address (or at least street block) that you could possibly be called to, then select your destination from the POIs. But that would involve an incredible amount of up-front work.

Hope you find a viable solution.
