Nuvi 760 Mapsource Questions

On my upcoming trip to CA in September I want to use my Nuvi 760. I already have Mapsource Nth America v7 on my laptop. I have transferred those maps to a CF card and used it last year in CA with my SP 2610.

I have just transferred the maps of CA and NV to an SD card to see how they look in the Nuvi. My question is how does the Nuvi know to use the maps on the SD card instead of the Australia maps loaded on the unit?

Does it automatically know to use the maps on the SD card when it is inserted in the unit?

I know that when I put the CF card in the SP 2610 I could look at the maps of the US and search for addresses etc to see how it worked. So far I cant seem to search for addresses in CA when I put the SD card in the Nuvi.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Go to Tools, Settings, Map, Map Info

Make sure it is seeing the new maps on the memory card and make sure they are enabled.

Thanks heaps for that suggestion Andy. I'll have to check it out when I get home as I'm at work on a rainy Sydney Sunday afternoon. I have the Nuvi with me but not the SD card

Hi Andy

I have just put the SD card in the unit and following your lead above on my Map Info screen I have:

City Navigator North America v7 and that is checked.

City Navigator Australia NT 2008 and that is unchecked.

When I go to see if I can find places and I change State/Province it seems to see California but from there on it cant find anything.

I have just thought of something!!! Because the pre loaded Australia Maps are the NT version does this mean that any extra maps I put on the SD card have to be the NT version because my North America v7 are not the NT version.

Thanks so much for all your help so far.

Maurice

Re: Nuvi 760 Mapsource Questions

UPDATE

It's the middle of the night here in Sydney and as I'm working I called Garmin support in the USA and asked the question about the version of the City Navigator Nth America maps. They said I need the NT version.

Over the weekend I had ordered online from a company in Vegas the 2008 City Navigator Nth America DVD. I now have to call them as soon as they open at 0800 and change the order to the NT version. They should ship it today by FedEx. I'm so happy I got this sorted out before they shipped the incorrect DVD

That's good they were able to resolve the problem. Now you just have to wait to see if it really did.

Hi Andy

Success. The NT DVD arrived and I have installed it on the PC and loaded the maps on to and SD card and they work perfectly!!

All I have to do now is wait until September to give them a really good try out in CA.

Thanks for your help

Re: Nuvi 760 Mapsource Questions

Greetings All! I just purchased the 760 after selling my 6000T and like the 760 a lot. I on occasion will go out of the country (US) to Europe or Japan. I was wondering (And I already know the 770 would have been better but wife had other ideas), if in the future I wanted to add a Europe or Asia Maps would you normally load them on the SD Cartridge and then select them from your examples above or how would you select them once I am out of the US. Or can I leave all enabled? Thanks!

Re: Nuvi 760 Mapsource Questions

Hello all. I'm new to the forum and thinking of getting a Nuvi 760. I'd like to plan some routes in advance if possible, choosing roads that the unit wouldn't pick (for their scenic value maybe) and maybe avoiding others. Some reviews I've read suggest that this is not possible with the 760 (whereas it is with a Tomtom). Then I saw that the 760 can be used with Mapsource and I wondered if this would provide a way to achieve what I'm after.

Re: Nuvi 760 Mapsource Questions

On Garmin's website they have something called MAD Maps, which are downloadable scenic routes that are compatible with the 760. I haven't tried them yet but sounds like the kind of thing you are after.

Re: Nuvi 760 Mapsource Questions

Welcome to the site nakkaned and BBP1!

The 760 allows you to plan routes ahead of time, using vias to align your route on specific roads. You can either do it on the device or in Mapsource and then upload the route to the 760. The one caveat is the 760 always recalculates the route when you tell it to start navigation on it. For example if you planned a route in Mapsource, had it set to what roads you want it to follow, the 760 may not pick the exact same roads. The way around this is to use a lot of vias and use the simulate (preview) mode on the 760 to check your route and make sure the device is following the exact route you planned in Mapsource.

MAD Maps were originally paper maps only for motorcyclists. They are a laminated type map with scenic/twisty/fun roads highlighted, usually 1 day or a few day trips in specific areas. I guess they must have signed some kind of agreement with Garmin to allow them to be uploaded to their devices! Definitely a cool move on their part!

I've used multiple map products but they were always different maps of the same area. I think you can leave them all enabled and as you navigate through an area it will display whatever map data it has. I think (notice I keep saying "I think" ) it's only when you have the same area with different map types (topo/street, etc) do you have to enabled/disable them.

Re: Nuvi 760 Mapsource Questions

Many thanks for the advice guys. The Forum seems really good. The MAD maps look like a great idea BBP1 but they seem to be just for the US and I'll mostly be using the NUVI in europe - in the Alps and the UK.

I like the idea of using vias Andy and I'm sure they'll allow me to plan things OK. I'm not too particular and I'd be relaxed about taking occasional routes the GPS doesn't recommend and then wait unti it recalculates once I'm on them. My mind is more or less made up now so hopefully I'll be using a 760 in the Dolomites and Austria in July. I'll let you know how I get on. You wouldn't happen to know if there are any topo maps for those areas I could also use on the 760 do you?

I'll probably hang back on buying it until just before I leave in case an upgraded model is released or the price comes down but it will be sometime in the next few weeks.

Re: Nuvi 760 Mapsource Questions

I could be wrong here, but he only maps you can get for the 760 are from Garmin. So if they don't have Topo for the Dolomites and Austria, you're probably out of luck.

Re: Nuvi 760 Mapsource Questions

Hi,
I have a zumo 550 with Europe NT (2007) and Mapsource.
No problems.
I've just bought a nuvi 760 w Europe 2008 preloaded.
Is there any way I can use Mapsource or do I have to buy a CD with the same map?
Now I can't export routes from Mapsource to 760. Both units show up in MS.

Regards,
Magnus Almgren

Re: Nuvi 760 Mapsource Questions

Magnus,

I too have a nuvi 760 with Europe 2008 pre-installed. I am able to create Mapsource routes and download to the 760 even though my Mapsource has V9 NT. However the 760 then reworks the route anyway. PLease let me know if you have difficulties doing this and I'll post what I did to get the route downloaded.

With reference to asking you to buy the DVD I am in the process of chasing Garmin and may even take legal advice on this as they are effectively asking you to buy Mapsource City Navigator twice.

I know of at least one customer in US who is having the DVD sent to him at no charge.
