What do I need City Nav NT or Mapsource? what's the difference?

Mapsource (link to download site)Is the app you load on your PC to manage the Garmin devices. You can use it to pull the data (favorites, poi, maps, routes, whatever) up from your GPS to your PC and save it in a file. You can also use it for waypoints and such that you've downloaded. In some cases it will place the waypoints 'in' your gps and in others it will place them 'on' your gps and you'll still need to run through the 'import' later. This is because GPS's are designed to transfer data directly via SD card now, so you have import and export right on the unit. Pull my SD out and give you my favorites, or waypoints, or route, etc. This is how yours stores 10 of them I presume - via the import.
Mapsource on it's own is not all that useful. It's like having a really nice motorcycle in the dead of winter...it looks really sharp and you can see the potential, but no love as stock it only has a basemap in it.

City Navigator NT (link to info/buy page)Is an autorouting map set that you load onto your gps (or is preinstalled in most cases today) from your PC. You toss the DVD in and unlock the maps on your PC via the yellow piece of paper your GPS assumedly came with. This is not used for updating maps in preloaded GPS units, only adding routes/poi and similar info to your device.
Typically this DVD will have Mapsource andCityNav on it and will install both.

Re: What do I need City Nav NT or Mapsource? what's the difference?

I'm confused. I just got my new eTrex Legend HCx (to replace my Magellan eXplorist 400 which I accidentally smashed). I bought City Navigator NT because it says routable. One of the reasons I bought the Legend was it says auto-routable.

Now trying to load maps from Mapsource onto the Legend, and the check box for "Include Routing Data" is grayed out. Do I have the wrong maps? The wrong GPS? I want to be able to route while I'm on the road, using the local streets.

I looked again at the Garmin web site, and don't see a different map set that I should be using. Please help!

Hi Terri!

You have the right product. That is normally grayed out unless the device you are using doesn't support auto routing.

That's a relief! Thank you. I went ahead and loaded down the maps, so on my way home from work I'll try a routing and make sure it's all working right.

I guess that's what I get for being a person who reads the manuals cover-to-cover before starting, rather than just blasting ahead pushing buttons.
