Erase map from BMW Navigator III / Garmin 2720/2820

Does anyone know a way to erase map from this thingie

I have citynavigator maps for US and EU and I am registered customer on Garmin database with all SN etc yadda yadda.

US map was already loaded by factory and I tried load full EU but memory runs out.

I would like to erase all maps and rather have 1 full coverage depending the continent I'm traveling, so I don't mind to erase one / download another when needed.

I travel back and forth between EU and US so maps are needed.

GSA huh, what year?

I have a 2720 , which is a notch or two below the BMW Nav III but I think the internal memory is the same. Though it has been awhile since I did this, I will grab my 2720 from the truck later today and refresh my memory for ya.

Re: Erase map from BMW Navigator III / Garmin 2720/2820

Bike is early 2007.

I have been snooping around web and it seems 2720/2820 have 2 different memory banks, a) "permanent" for map downloaded by factory and b) space for additional maps owner can download and overwrite.

I wrote to Garmin asking about this but never got answer so them.

At least if someone would have a way to connect it to computer as memory card but I haven't found program that would show it as additional drive.

Re: Erase map from BMW Navigator III / Garmin 2720/2820

Nice machine, have you seen the 08's yet? at least the new GSA's are ok but the GS's are now.
Mine is a late 07 (GS non-Adv.), I just couldn't convince myself to take it places I take the KLR, so I kept the KLR

My 2720 just came home (she took my truck to work today) so I will try to tinker with it tonight and see what I can figure out. I was positive I've done this, but I might be thinking of my 2610.

Yep I saw 2008 and I do agree you about the look. They seem to try to make it more sophisticated to be alike highschool prom queen and I had my share with those idiots so no more

06-07 GS and A is more pure workhorse what I was looking for and takes me beyond my skills and less ridden roads...

Back to the business, I tried to use "erase user information" but it seems to be general "restore defaults" erasing user set ups and waypoints but it doesn't affect maps.

Sorry for the distractedness - I keep forgetting to get the 2720 and try this . I've been oncall the past week so I've been a bit scatterbrained, but I really will check this out tomorrow, really.

Re: Erase map from BMW Navigator III / Garmin 2720/2820

Im lost...it seems I can push new maps onto the device and they magically go somewhere - but there isn't really ever an option to get rid of the others.

I'll post up the photos I took of the inside of my 2720 though if you'd like, since I was really curious what they used for embedded memory

Re: Erase map from BMW Navigator III / Garmin 2720/2820

Thanks and sure I'd like to see what these machines have eaten

Finally I got same emails from Garmin and they said 2720 should show up in "my computer" folder as additional drive so there would be access to memory if needed.

I can't find it from "my computer" but Mapsource shows it and download/upload works fine??

I have flight to catch tonight so I'm gone for couple weeks....

are you going to post the pictures of the inside ot the 2720? Would be interessting to see what and how they manage the memory in there.

Thanks

Harry

Re: Erase map from BMW Navigator III / Garmin 2720/2820

I guess I could one of these days...as far as memory goes, it's all internal and/or shielded, no CF or anything to speak of. But I will try to get the photos up here soon

Re: Erase map from BMW Navigator III / Garmin 2720/2820

Despite what Garmin Tech Support folks may have said to some, the SP2720 will NOT show up on your PC as a "letter" drive. Nuvi's do, but the 2720 (and some others) do not.

So, that being the case, how does one go about deleting old maps to make room for new maps? I, too, faced that problem, and finally stumbled across the following link, which explains it all. Success at last!

Smellybiker's Wanderlust Worldmap • View topic - IMG2GPS - Replacing primary mapping on Garmin 2720

Read thru the entire thread... it's not long, and it's VERY informative.

To make a long story short, Garmin's WebUpdater application is used in command line mode to accomplish this. You'll need MapSource installed on your PC, a copy of the new maps you want to copy to the device, and a valid 25-character unlock code for each map you want to copy to your 2720; this is typically purchased from Garmin. (The unlock code needs to be specific to the device you're going to update the maps on. Just because you have CNNANT2009 installed in MapSource, with an unlock code for your Nuvi, doesn't help; you need an unlock code for the specific device to which you're sending maps, the SP2720. Got it? )

Once you have all this in place, you simply open MapSource, select the mapset you want (City Navigator North America NT 2009, for example), select all the map tiles you want included (typically all), then select 'Send to Device', choosing an SD card or thumb drive as the destination (not your 2720). Once you start the process, go get a cup of coffee... or three... and come back an hour (?) later to find that you've got a brand new 'gmapsupp.img' image file in a 'Garmin' folder on your thumb drive (or SD card, depending on which you selected).

Re-name the 'gmapsupp.img' file to 'gmapprom.img', then copy the newly-re-named file to your C:\Garmin\ folder and get ready to open a DOS window and run the appropriate command, as described in the link above. WebUpdater, now running in command line mode, immediately erases the old 'gmapprom.img' image file in your SP2720 and starts copying over the new one you've just compiled with MapSource. It takes about an hour for CN North America NT 2009, or an hour and a half for the larger CN Europe NT 2009, but when it completes, the old map is GONE and the new map is in place.

You're gonna be a happy camper, bro!

Nice write-up, thanks.

Curious, though... why not just put it in a directory on the hard drive? Wouldn't it be faster, and mean you don't need an SD card or thumb drive?

Or does it have to be fooled into thinking it is writing to a GPS even though it isn't?

Re: Erase map from BMW Navigator III / Garmin 2720/2820

MapSource does not allow you to choose one of your hard drives when you 'Send to Device', only thumb drives, SD cards (by way of an SD card Reader/Writer) and any connected GPS receivers.

Why? No clue, but that's what they've done.

Fortunately, there is a re-compiled MapSource executable available on the peer-to-peer networks which, when used in place of the original executable, will allow you to select your hard drives as a destination in the 'Send to Device' operation. I didn't get into that discussion with my initial post, as that information is covered in the thread I originally pointed to, and requires a bit of additional work above and beyond the primary mission of erasing old maps and installing new ones.

Hope that helps!
