Re: KNA-G510 and City navigator Map Updates

I doubt that would work.

The City Navigator maps installed on any particular unit are software locked to that specific unit and will not work with any other unit. They can't just be copied as-is from one unit to another unit.

If you purchase a City Navigator NT DVD from Garmin (or if you already have one), you can purchase additional unlock codes from the Garmin web site so that you can load the maps onto additional units.

There are also ways to pirate City Navigator so that it'll run on any unit you like without an unlock code, but I won't discuss that here.

Highly unlikely. The nüvi 760 map will be locked to the serial number of that unit.

You can put the map on another unit, but it probably won't load.

astrodanco beat me to it.

gotcha so what Brian was talking about was utilizing the NT Navigator DVD to create maps on SD card for the KNA-G510.

Re: KNA-G510 and City navigator Map Updates

Years ago when you purchased a map DVD, Garmin would give you two unlock codes so that you could load the maps onto two separate units. But these days get only one unlock code with each DVD purchase. This has had the effect of discouraging second Garmin GPS purchases (or encouraging map pirating, depending on the individual).

Re: KNA-G510 and City navigator Map Updates

ok gotcha. I noticed on the garmin site Kenwood map updates have a different part number as opposed to regular NT Navigator updates anyone know why? I was thinking of possibly getting a map update from a cheaper reseller but most only have the standard NT Navigator part number as opposed to the kenwood update. Wondering what the differences were.

It doesn't help me to update from 07 to 09 has the 09 still doesn't have the new overpass in my town and has led me too a couple dead ends in Kansas City. Garmin had better get on the ball or I might have to switch too nothing

Re: KNA-G510 and City navigator Map Updates

Are you honestly worried about missing changes in areas that you are already familiar with? Although the GPSR may not know about road changes in such areas, YOU do. I wouldn't rely the GPSR to navigate anywhere that you're already familiar with. You're likely to know better than it does. You might use it to locate and pinpoint a specific address that you've never been to before in an otherwise familiar area, but not much else.

The only time when I really count on my GPSR and when being up-to-date map wise is important is when I'm in a totally unfamiliar area for the very first time. Also, when I'm familiar with an area, I put the GPSr into 2D North up mode. When I'm unfamiliar with an area and following a GPSR calculated route, I put it into 3D heading up mode.

But if it's wrong in my area it's more than 60% wrong in your area too. Besides that it's wrong in everybody elses GPS and that little road handles 10,000 cars a day. If you go by the GPS you will think you are in the wrong state. If I'm paying $100+ for maps they better have it right!!!

What are we supposed to do? Say nothing while people drive off the cliff? But since we know the cliff is there we don't need to put up a sign?!

That's an interesting statistic. How did you come up with that?

If they're using a Garmin, yup!

I wish they did, but it seems that such accuracy and timeliness realistically costs quite a bit more than that to obtain. BTW, I hope you didn't actually pay that much to update your maps.

From my experience, I gather we're expected to grin and bear it.
