Losing satellites with 660

I had to make a drive from Dallas to a cabin on the water just south of Lake Charles, La. I decided to place my total trust in the 660 and didn't bother to print out any maps or directions. Somewhere on a two lane road in the middle of east Texas the 660 loses satellite reception. Thanks to my cell phone and my kids with Goggle maps at home I managed to get there. However for the rest of the drive and for two days while there, it never picked up the satellites again. Then on the way home at about the same point that I lost reception, it just comes back. I recently downloaded the latest software. Have any of you seen something like this? You don't fully appreciate it till it's gone. I have not had a chance to call tech support yet, but I assume the world GPS net did not go down for 2 days

Re: Losing satellites with 660

Did you try reseting it?

Also looks like we're getting stronger signals from the satellites.

Re: Losing satellites with 660

I reset it with the button in the back, but at the time I had not read about the hard reset pressing on the lower right corner. Last night I went into the updater and installed updated GPS and Bluetooth files, maybe that will take care of the problem. My worry is that I might not find out until next time I am halfway to Louisiana

Re: Losing satellites with 660

OK, I just did a hard reboot and now I can't even get a satellite in Dallas. Just called Garmin and they are now telling me that I need to wait 30 to 40 minutes for their tech support Why did I wait till after Christmas to make the call?

Re: Losing satellites with 660

Try letting it sit outside in an open area for about 15 minutes. My old 76S needs about that long if I haven't used it in a long time. I haven't seen that with my 660 though. Hopefully your wait time on the phone won't be that long. Good luck!

Re: Losing satellites with 660

Interesting - did you have any luck with this?

I had a similar issue with my C530 immediately following a firmware update some time ago, but it was resolved via hard booting it and then letting it sit outside (well on my dash) for a long period of time.

The units can get sensitive to heat, but I'd expect it's location to be well within the desired operation specifications of it.

Re: Losing satellites with 660

I talked to tech support and I am sending it back. I did the hard boot, erasing all the memory. Left it outside for a period of time, and it still loses the satellites for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. I think this may be beyond a software issue.

Wow, that definitely sounds bizarre...almost sounds like a flaky chipset. Sorry for the experience rick

Re: Losing satellites with 660

There is an area near me. That when I am using my Explorist XL that the unit just locks up and I have to reboot it. It is with in a 2 mile radius of a Microwave transmitting tower. If I just continue driving it will start to work again but as soon as I get near the Microwave tower it locks up again.

I just got the TT720 and the Garmin 760 and have not driven by the area yet. I don't know if it affects those units.
