Zumo help please!

Please understand that this is my first GPS unit that I have owned that would give me directions. As stated before I just received my Garmin Zumo last week and have been playing around with it. So I now have some concerns that I am not doing something correctly.

Let me first tell you how my Zumo is set up. Well this is how it came out of the box and I did not change it.

It is set for “Fastest Time”. GPS Mode set to “Normal”. And the following “Avoidances” are checked off. “U-turns, Traffic and Car Pool Lanes”.

So on my way to my camp in the Adirondack Mountains I had my Zumo guide the way. There is only one “main” route to my camp, but my Zumo wanted me to turn on a “side street” and route back around to the main route again. So I would take a detour off the fastest route of about 3 miles to come right back onto the main route again. What is up with that?

Now on the way into work this morning I had it route me again. Still set with the settings as listed above. Now I take all main highways into work. So Zumo was guiding me on the first main route with no problems. Estimated arrival time is 6:52.

Next it wants me to turn off the main route and onto some side routes when the main expressway is only about 1/8 of a mile ahead. So I ignore the suggested route and continue onto the expressway. My Zumo re-calculates and tells me to take the expressway and now gives me a new arrival time of 6:44.

I don’t understand if the unit is set up for the “fastest” time, why won’t it route me to the expressway in the first place? Or why it would have me go off a main route and then put me right back on it?

Do I have this unit set-up wrong? Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Ken

Re: Zumo help please!

With the GPS mode set to normal, it is not using WAAS correction data. WAAS consumes more power but if it's hardwire to the bike that won't be a problem. Enabling WAAS makes it much more accurate. Maybe with it in normal mode, it is thinking you are actually on a side street as you pass it. Without WAAS, it can be off by 30-50 feet easily.

Try changing that and see if it helps.

Some information about WAAS at Garmin's site,

I will try this. Thank you very much. I thought it might be something simple. Did not even think about WAAS. Had that set up on my Legend.

Thanks again, will let you know.

Re: Zumo help please!

Of course the Zumo has a Sirfstar chipset, so I really wouldn't think inaccuracy was a factor

I do know with my Nuvi660 it routed me more efficiently side by side to my C530 for some reason. The C530 likes to do some of the more wacky stuff Hookman is talking about, I scratch my head sometimes, but it's going for its first road trip tomorrow (San Antonio) so we shall see. I know my way around their ok...but have always had a gps with me to help out

Come to think of it my Nuvi and my 60CSx routed the exact same way...the C530 is the only one giving me weird routes. You think it's worth dumping some fresh maps into it or something? couldn't hurt right?

Re: Zumo help please!

Ok, my Zumo seems to be better now that I have is set for WAAS. My trips into work are better. Will have to try it again on my way to my camp to see if that is fixed.

Thanks for everyones assistance.
