So, here's the first question. I bought a 2730 1 year ago.

I use the XM radio all the time.

After about 2 months , the first unit failed, it was a USB issue. (no communication with my PC) garmin replaced the GPS. Three months later, the second GPS failed...same problem, it would not up/down Ld to my PC, but the XM worked fine (both the PC interface and the XM antena use the same USB port) Garmin then replaced both the GPS, as well as the XM antena.....so far, so good.

I am very careful with my gear and for the life of me can't figure out what the problem is. I spoke with the service rep @ Garmin, and it was decided that perhaps the culprit was the XM antena itself that may have been shorting out the unit ( ? )


Has anyone else had a problem with the USB port on any of the newer Garmin units?

Interesting, so you are saying it was only the (2) units that failed and the (3rd) with new GXM30 are still chugging along ok?

It sounds to me like it was exactly what you suspect, in regards to the XM antenna failing and/or grounding something to your chassis that maybe shouldn't have been.

I had a 2720 and never had any issues with USB, but all I did was use it for upload download of tracklogs (which I did quite a bit) on both auto power and the home adapter. It worked fine for this task without any issues, very reliably.

If there was an issue of the GXM variety, an issue of this type may occur with the Zumo as well...just something to keep in mind as youre digging for info.
