GPS signal quality

Hi

I have presently a Garmin Etrex. The features of this GPS are perfect for me but the signal quality is very poor. Immediately when they are some trees the GPS lost the signal. I would like to buy an othe one with better signal quality. I simply want a GPS with Etrex features and with a good reception. I have seen the Etrex H. Is it really better? I have also seen Magellan Explorist 100 and 500. It seems it is a simillar signal captor. Is the Mangellan Explorist have a good reception?

Thank you

Vehicle track logging, what is the best solution for me?

Hi, I'm new around here, I am currently doing a project in college and I need to measure driving cycles of various cars to try and estimate the emissions that are giving out from cars. I need some sort of GPS track logger to keep a track of where the car went to, but I am struggling to find something that fits my requirements!

I basically need a stand alone data logger, that automatically starts logging data as soon as the vehicle ignition is started. (ie I don't want the drive to have to turn on the gps logger themselves). I would like to be able to open the tracklogs in googlemaps, and ideally there would be a different file for each trip taken. Also It would need to be able to store several days worth of data (well say on average up to 4/5hours of driving a day).

Finally, It needs to be as cheap as possible, ideally with no monthly subscription fees.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

what are the limitations of my Nuvi 255W?

I just bought this a couple days ago. I'm not sure of all I can accomplish with it but I have ambitions of following preplanned routes to explore rural back roads in a circumference around my home base, Philly.

I'm all ready an experience trekker and do well enough with what printed maps I can get a hold of. I'll get what I can out of a GPS but am not afraid to fall back to print as a back up mode, if need be.

Not even really knowing all I might be getting into, I all ready have ambitions of getting a topographical map for backroad touring. I am sure it would be be a lot more interesting than whatever stock street map the gps is going to show me.
I might do some hiking and my 255W is small enough I can tuck it away and carry it along, but 99% of the use will be in the car.

So having stated my mission, how will this Nuvi 255W fall short? What won't it do that I will want or need later? For now, it's a great start and I'm not diss'ing it, but what to the more expensive units offer that mine doesn't?

Hi

I want to ask quite a lot of a GPS set up.
1. The set up will be used to track an animal in an enclosure of about 60m by 60m with fairly dense tree cover.
2. I would like fairly good accuracy (around 5m or less).
3. The transmitter on the animal will need to be able to withstand serious sub zero temperatures.
4. I would also like it to be possible to record not only the global position but also the distance of the animal from a set position in the enclosure.

Hope this doesn’t pose too much of a challenge

Hi,

I work as a photographer at a ski resort in the Salt Lake City area (Park City) I want to expand the service. I want to be able to give my clients a small tracking device and then have my photographers, which will be stationed around the resort and on the slopes, be able to "see" them on an iPad map program and get nice cadid shots and vids as the enjoy their day. Candid shots can be the nicest pics. I have looked online and do not see devices that are smaller than the old pagers. I would not want to carry a bulky unit around. I did find one that was as small as a keychain but it was a logger. I have to have the units real time not recorded points. I guess I watch too many spy movies. I expected that real little ones would be easy to find. I am looking to buy at least 50 and maybe as many as 100. I don't know anything about gps units and hoped that someone on this forum might give me some guidance.

Thanks,

Jeff

Transfer from Mac to Zumo

Hello
I am new to the forum and am having trouble with getting a route from my Mac into the Zumo. I have created the route in RoadTrip, and the manual says simply to click send to get it to the Zumo. Doing this has the Mac working for a few seconds then informs me that one route, no waypoints etc have been successfully sent. I then open up my Zumo which informs me that there is new data to import. I say yes I want to import it, the Zumo works for a fraction of a second, then I am faced with import all which I select, then am faced with deselect all. At this point I can toggle between select and deselect, but no route is identified or imported. I need some help in getting this accomplished. Have tried this on two Macs, same result.
Thanks for your help.

I currently have a Tom Tom One XL S. I have never been able to get it to work quite right. It always gives me directions that are just a bit off or have me going farther than needed. Anyways I just spent about 5 hours trying to find a way to rearrange the way that the device decides it wants to go. I tried a site that would take my google map and turn it to a itn file for the Tom Tom and that would either give me errors or the Tom Tom itself would all of a sudden rearrange my route to the way it wants. I tried using Tyre and it works nice but give a bit and Tom Tom will rearrange it the way it wants it. As for the itinerary planner that the unit has, yeah, it was almost impossible to figure out. The only thing that works is going in and telling the thing to avoid roads until it is forced to take the route I want it to. It's incredibly frustrating...

I tried Tom Tom's route planner and found that all it really did was send an ending point to you Tom Tom. Is there a GPS system out there that will let you set up a route on your computer, and then transfer it to the unit? What I really wish is that I could get a system that would let me use something like google maps, especially with its drag the route option, and then send it to the unit.

I really thought a trip editing option like the google maps thing would be standard on these things. At least for the hook up the computer part. I like to sit down and plan out my trip before going. When I look up google maps I study the maps and make changes as I see fit. Why is it a royal nightmare to do that with my Tom Tom?

And to be perfectly honest, if this is how these gps's are then I'm just gonna sell this thing and go back to using google maps like I used to. I mean what's the use of having a navigation system that only goes where it wants to and not where you want it to go?

And I'm hoping that it's just Tom Tom and there are better systems out there because when the thing actually does work right (The parts between starting by turning off because I want to take an easier way than what it wants me to do and having to turn it off again because I'm getting closer to the point of where I have to ignore the stupid things directions because I know better) it's actually really nice to have...

I love my GPS's but I'm sort of fed up with their limitations. Perhaps I can list things I like and hate and y'all can recommend something I can be happy with.
TomTom
Hate list:

* I'm in my friend's driveway and I mark it. I can't return to it because it's not exactly on a road. This is unbelievably stupid.
* Routing isn't as good as others
* Menu system sucks - sometimes I feel like I've gone down the rabbit hole and no easy way back (besides endless back buttons)
* In Texas we get a lot of addresses that refer to interstates and direction - Like 13505 I-35 N. The TomTom is useless for these. It also has a tough time with county roads (CR), farm to market (FM), and other designations. Most times I cannot find the road in teh database and they've been in existance forever so it isn't a current map issue. The Garmin I put in 1423 and it will find it regardless of nomenclature.
* Map updates suck. In 3 updates in three different units there have never been enough internal memory. So what happens is internal memory gets corrupted which means I have to run off the card. Unacceptable.
* No reasonable routing function so I can plan a route I want to take and load it into the unit.
* No sub-types on POI's. Garmin will let me pick what *type* of restaurant I want. Also no clear idea of which way the POI lies from my current trajectory.
* Absolutely primitive mounting with an obtrusive power cord - they could have at least made it low profile or into the rear of the unit at an angle.
* When getting a favorite - give me the option to sort by distance or name. Sometimes I'm coming at a favorite from a new direction and it would be nice to have ZZ Top BBQ at the top since I'm close rather than scroll the whole list.

Love list:

* Easy - VERY easy - entry of custom POI's.
* POI's are visible from any zoom level. Easily my favorite thing about these units being able to see there's a Costco 2 blocks over in a strange town, or a BofA ATM on my current route.
* The ability to take a route and avoid the parts I don't want to take. Very useful when I feel like avoiding a section of interstate when riding my motorcycle. Much better than Garmins brain-damaged detour.

Garmin Nuvi 750
Hate list

* Mostly good routing but occasionally I get utterly bizarre routing that occasionally has me literally in the middle of somebody's back yard on a dead end road in rural Georgia (serious happened at 2 AM).
* Brain damaged POI's and the methods to get them in your unit.
* Without tricks such as alerts, you cannot get a POI to simply show up on the unit. I WANT to see POI's as I'm tooling down the road and it should not involve tricks, dark secrets and incantations to get them. Even when you do teh special tricks they are not reliable and do not show at all zoom levels. This is a major pet peeve with Garmin is their crappy POI implementation.
* Keyboard is ok but could use a better placed and larger space bar.
* When doing a POI find it seems stupid to have to specify a city/state every damned time. Make it an option to change the City and state and otherwise assume it's from my position. This really gets to be a PITA when a metro region can contain several little burgs all rolled together. An example is here in Austin - if I'm in Round Rock or Pflugerville and I'm looking for a specific BBQ joint - it won't find them if I specify Austin. When you're in a strange town you don't necessarily know the details. Gimme the closest Mel's BBQ ok?
* Brain damaged detours. I've had this thing literally route me off an exit and right back on the same road when I asked it to get me a detour. I love TomTom's system - copy it!

Love list:

* The mounting system is perfect. Make it a standard. Seems like way more connector pins than necessary but that's ok. The quick connect and disconnect without fiddling with power cables too is awesome. Makes the Garmin my choice unit for my motorcycle for this feature alone.
* Routing. It's accurate for the most part and tells me which side of the road if it can tell.
* I can upload routes. they are limited and can use improvements but it's there.
* The trip info screen. Awesome for my motorcycle having a GPS speedo, trip, min max average speed. Excellent! Too bad they couldn't overlay this info over the route/map.
* Excellent ability to understand where I want to go when obscure county and special road nomenclature is involved. Better than most in my experience as I can usually just type in the number and it gives me reasonable options to select from. Not always but usually.
* Love the subtypes on restaurants and also the direction from my current trajectory. This is one good thing about their POI's I like.
* Just thought of another one; the Garmin is smart enough to get the street number first so it can helpfully eliminate streets it cannot be when offering educated guesses. Cool! Tom Tom you have to guess is that on east or west SomeStreet?

So there's my like/dislike list. Is there a unit out there I can have it all? So many folks out there getting into the business I can't keep up and don't have teh time to read *everything*.
Thanks!

We are seeking input to help purchase some GPS units to track our powersport rental fleet. We rent ATV’s, snowmobiles and motorcycles and want to be able to track them from our store. Don’t know much about the whole GPS thing, but they need to be small enough to hide the units on the machines and would like to be able to use web based tracking. Of course cost is a factor so we may be willing to sacrifice some features we may not use if that saves a few dollars. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Advise on GPS purchase for someone who only wants it occasionally

I am seeking advise on a new GPS unit for my wife. We currently have a Garmin nuvi 750 but is is not meeting her needs.

My wife is directionally challenged and extremely likely to get lost while driving. At the same time, she hates gadgets and devices, especially if they are difficult to use.

She recognizes she needs a GPS in her car -- but she has a way she wants to use it that makes it difficult. When my wife is driving streets she recognizes, she does not want the GPS on or to even see it. She only wants to use it for the 10% of the time she is driving someplace new. The problem with our current GPS is that since she keeps it unplugged most of the time, it needs a few minutes to figure out the current location. My wife usually has kids in the car and she cannot wait that long to get going.

I know that a cell-phone may be better since it does not take as long to figure out is location but she needs something that is very easy to use when driving.

Do we need a built-in GPS unit (where the display can be turned off) even though it is not needed the great majority. Or is there some easy to use portable option that can be kept off most of time time and then can be turned on when needed.

Thanks.

Yesterday morning I had a problem with Matilda. (Miltida is my Garmin 760) She did not want to turn on. Finally did.

That got me to thinking just what unit would I purchase if she did not come back to life. I want at minimum the functionality of the Garmin 760. I might like voice input. I would also like one that could tell what time zone it was operating in.

That is one of my gripes with Mitalda. She stays on Central Time regardless of where I am. Obviously if she can tell where she is geographically she can also tell time zone.

I woulf also like one that shows total road mileage when I look at the favorites list. Matilda only shows "as the crow flies" mileage.

It would also be convenient to have one that I can turn off the voice prompt so that I do not have to continually hear "correcting" when I am doing something she does not like.

What do you all think?

I know the MMC/SD card is installed properly, because when I go to "Browse MMC Cards" the Nautic Path software is listed. Is the file possible corrupted??

Cheap GPS Tracker for Motorcycle

*Hey, I'm looking for a tracking device for my new to be Sportbike in case it gets stolen, which won't be 2 unlikely.

I've been reading all about GPSs for about a day now, but its a bit hard to figure it out with all the diff types and required presumed technical knowledge to find how I can do what i want.

Heres the deal, I'm looking seemingly for a Data Puller/Transponder with GPS that I can hide somewhere in the panels of my bike, which I can activate when I decide to, instead of having it track continuously thus sending a lot of data, and draining the batteries.Of course this means that I also want rechargeable lithium batteries that I can perhaps connect to the battery so I never have to worry about them.

The problem ive seen with all GPSs, is that they req. some kind of a subscription, or if its coupled with SMS/SIM cards you need to pay for that. I searched the forum and found a small post about non-SIM trackers which were well priced at $100, but are they really FREE? I want to be able to send info to my computer/phone since I have a 3g HTC HD2 touchscreen phone with built in GPSR. That way I can just track my bike thru Google Maps via my phone which has a data plan so I won't have to pay anything extra other than just the Tracking Device itself. Is this POSSIBLE? It needs to be small enough (palm of hand no bigger), and also strong enough to go through the metal roofs of vans where stolen bikes are most often transported. I'm looking for a battery life of at least a month, and then itl recharge from the bike so it wont be a burden for me since I plan to plant in somewhere hard to reach and find which will sit there for a long time and would be able to resist the weather since I ride everyday, rain or not.

Thanks.

How to create categories and folders in GPS device

Hello, I have a list on Excel of about 500 different locations in the US and Europe. The list includes separate columns for place name, latitude and longitude coordinates, address, phone number, web site and remarks. I have been able to import the list to the Expert GPS program by first saving the .xls file as a .csv file and then using File > Import Data. This generates a list, arranged alphabetically, of locations which I can then save as a .gpx file and copy to one of my Garmin units when connected to my computer with a USB cord. When using the Garmin this works well enough but makes navigating through the list on the Garmin quite difficult as the device displays locations by proximity. So if you are in St. Paul and want to see what's available on the list in Chicago, you might have to scoll through over one hundred entries.

I have three questions and would greatly appreciate any help in figuring them out.

First, is there a way to categorize the locations into hierarchical folders? For example, US > Midwest > Wisconsin > Madison? That way one could first navigate to the "Madison" folder on the Garmin to see what's available in Madison, without having to scroll through many other extraneous entries. Same for Europe (Europe > France > Paris > Museums).

Second, can this information be copied onto an SD card (using Windows Explorer, for example) which could then be inserted into the Garmin, allowing access to this information without having to connect each unit to a computer? That way, for example, I could send an SD card to my brother in Colorado and he could then navigate to the locations I have specified in Madison, just by inserting my SD card into his Garmin.

Third, can I make this work in the same (or similar) manner with a TomTom device? I don't believe TomTom uses .gpx data but is there a way to get my list from Excel onto a TomTom, preferably using an SD card?

Many thanks in advance for any help. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to these matters so greatly appreciate your input and help.

GPS shows wrong distance

Hi,

I have a Clarion NICE 430. I have been using it for last two years without any problem. However, since the last week it has been acting weird. It shows streets and roads but doesn't highlight the route it has selected. Yesterday, for a route about 100km long it was showing a distance of 1200km. The directions it is giving are totally wrong.

I tried turning it off and on. I also gave it a hard reset by poking a small pin its RESET hole, but the problem exists.

What can be done to fix this problem?

Thanks,

MG.

I am considering purchasing a TomTom XL335 SE or LM model. What are your recommendations ? Is it a good unit with minimal problems or is it a real headache ? I would be using the unit pretty much on a daily basis.

Hi- I have a Magellan 1400 and its about 2 years old. It has worked great until maybe a month ago and the problem begin intermittently and now has progressed to not working at all. When using the unit the screen would just go black or from time to time and it would ask if I wanted to continue on battery power. My car power cord has an indicator light showing that I have power so I would move the cord around and the unit would come back on so I thought maybe the cord is bad. Bought another cord, same problem. I am about ready to buy a new battery but I don't want to put too much money in this unit, I may just be in the market for a new GPS and maybe another brand. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what my problem could be before I either put more money in this one or buy a new unit ? Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Hi there,

I purchased a Uniden GNS8431 and purchased the map SD card second hand at a different place. The mobilenavigator program doesn't full screen. the program is 3" diagonally and not the 4.2" that the unit is.

Is this because the previous GPS device that used this SD card was a 3" model and the software made only for that model?

The sd card is meant to be compatible with my device.

Is it possible to change the size of the program?
or create a configuration txt file that will tell it to run the program at the correct size.

S/W version - v3.0.0.00 (2007/06/20)
Key Code - UNIDEN(GNS8350/GNS8400)
Safety Version - v1.1

Any help will be greatly appreciated
